Play. Create. Share. Awesome.
LittleBigPlanet from MediaMolecule is an innovative 2D platformer that will blow your mind; this game isn’t just a platformer though. MM introduced Play. Create. Share to Sony. With this, LBP’s core-idea was born.
This game really sprouted a beautiful community, and stays true to its motto. You start this game by PLAYing, obviously. Starting out doing the set-piece story missions is enjoyable, but that is just the beginning, and doesn’t really show the full potential of the game. From here we move to Create. There is an extensive tutorial system to get you comfortable and used to how every tool works; they introduce the tools to you one at a time with enough explanation to get your creative juices flowing. Then we move onto Share, which when looking at this game now, blows your freakin’ mind! The amount of levels (over 2.5 million+ to date) is staggering. They range from stupid, to trophy based, to levels designed better than the actual story missions, all a blast to play. (You may get some frame-rate issues on custom levels, but it’s nothing to make a big deal about.)
The DLC for this game is satisfying and it'll leave a hole in your packet. I’m not saying it’s pricey, I’m saying that there is a lot of quality content that you’ll want to download; from sticker packs, to add-on content to sack boy skins that are too cute for words. (The Iron Man outfit is amazing… throw on the infamous gloves and your mind will EXPLODE! No, really, it will, look below this text.)
The editor itself is easy, yet complex. When you really get into it, the amount of things you can do with what you’re given is endless. Or just hop online and ride rollercoaster’s or a tea cup, your choice. Either way, you need to have played this game by today, or be buying it right now as you read this review. There is nothing more I can say.
At first I was skeptical about buying this game. “Oh, it’s just a stupid kiddy game, who cares?” Once I realized I was an idiot, I got the GOTY edition and was hit in the face with the fresh gameplay each and every time I play. If you’re feeling like this… it’s time to realize and recognize this game! (Or just wait until LittleBigPlanet 2, which hits North America on November, 16th 2010.)
