Light of Altair's gameplay consists of an objectives based, single-player only campaign in which the player builds and controls colonies for one of eight different factions. As colonies progress, they grow in size, population and income. Colonies can expand as far as there is space availible. Colonies cannot overlap each other or occupy water or uninhabitable land.

There is often competition between the player and one or more factions with occasional combat. The player builds ships for combat by picking schematics and adding weapons, armor and modifications to allotted slots.
