A non-interactive sequence within a game most often used for plot advancement.
Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment (named to fit the acronym 'FREE') is a quasi-genre invented by designer Yu Suzuki, describing a blend of adventure and open-world sandbox gameplay found in the Shenmue franchise.
Characters controlled by the game for players to interact with, as opposed to player characters which are controlled by whomever is playing the game.
A cutscene that is viewed through the eyes of the protagonist or some other character. POV stands for "point of view".
Quick Time Events show up in all sorts of games as an attempt to make cutscenes interactive. Press the buttons displayed on-screen before time runs out, or else.
Games that overlay realtime characters or objects over FMV (full motion video) cutscenes to lessen the contrast against the realtime portion of the game.
Sometimes, things are just meant to happen the way they do. Usually triggered by a timer, or by the player crossing a checkpoint.
The limitations of early gaming hardware, especially in the 8-bit and 16-bit days, made animated story sequences impractical for many games. One popular alternative was to convey the story through a series of still images, often with text and music alongside them.
