Hyakkimaru was born a disfigured child, as his father had entered a contract with 48 demon lords for power using his child's body parts as payment. Abandoned, he was taken in by the kindly priest and inventor Jyukai, who outfitted him with various weapons and mechanical parts to help him see and speak.
After discovering what had happened to him, he goes off on a journey to slay the fiends and recover his natural body parts. He is joined by resourceful boy (actually girl) thief Dororo, who often helps out in various ways.
