The Game
Hardland is a narrative-driven adventure game with an open world and a non-linear structure where the story is encountered and delivered in small chunks dispersed all around the game. The player is asked to pay attention to the clues found in dialogue, books, notes, letters, etc. and over time, piece together a picture of the world, its characters, and their relationships. The world is deep, consisting of many hidden layers and locations, both real and in dreams.
The game's main influence is the Quest for Glory series, Sierra's adventure/role-playing hybrid from the 1990s, but Hardland also bears resemblance to Her Story by Sam Barlow due to the non-linear way players explore the story in both games.
Hardland was designed by brothers Timo and Kimmo Vihola, who are best known for their critically-acclaimed games on iOS such as the Minigore series, Ice Rage, Bike Baron, and Death Rally; and written by Chandler Groover, an award-winning writer and designer of contemporary text adventures such as Midnight. Swordfight., Eat Me, and Toby's Nose.
