Grand Theft Auto is a sandbox-violence game, that has drawn attention all over the world, and has pretty much become one of the most noticeable criminal-sandbox franchises ever.
San Andreas because it was just more fun than all of them. I still pop it in just to fuck around for an hour or three. It also had the best music. Not so much the chat stations, but the music was better.
Vice City's my favourite, though San Andreas would come out on top easily if it wasn't for me not really liking all of the ghetto gangsta culture during the early stages. CJ was just annoying, overall, as well.
Vice City is the only one I never finished. Kinda lost interest in the series. Picked San Andreas up out of boredom one day and loved it. GTA IV is my favorite so far. It was a little serious, but I liked Niko.
Vice City: best character driven GTA story without the protagonist's moral struggle making it feel inappropriate to kill thousands of innocent people for fun.
I like GTA IV, simply becuase I like that world they built fo rthat game, it's the only GTA game, to me, that felt alive... Yeah I know corny gamer speak
It's IV for me. I never got to play through an entire game in the III series, but IV just kept me to want to keep pushing through it the entire time. That doesn't happen all too often for me anymore.
San Andreas - It is the largest, has more to do in the world than any other, the controls are the best in the series (flame me if you want but the driving is borked in 4 and I don't like how they removed the targeting system from San Andreas), the characters are the best in the series, and open world GTA games hadn't been as overdone yet. Edit : The soundtrack isn't the best, yet it is still better than the 80's pop-trash from Vice City. It doesn't really matter much anyways because after ten hours of playtime I turn off the sound in every GTA so I can listen to my own music.
GTA III because I would come home from school and for hours I would go on killing sprees until I had the army chasing me. Then I would run to a corner pull out the all weapons and ammo cheats and try to kill them all. I would go to this one part of the city that you could crash into a fence and make your car do multiple backflips. I have grown tired of all GTA's since.
Vice City had the best music for sure, and was probably my favorite game of the PS2 GTAs. That said, I think 4 was my favorite overall, the more serious tone and improved controls made it a revelation for me when it came out.
San Andreas for the ease of "role-playing" and the variety (including scenic, musical, mission types, etc...). I respect what Vice City did to improve upon GTA3, but San Andreas was the first to have enough things to do. Also it was the first game I learned how to use the right stick to smoothly control the camera while driving (Xbox then PC versions), which makes wasting time out on country roads listening to music that much more enjoyable.
But Vice City Stories and other R*Leeds GTAs have a LOT of really good improvements that haven't been fully adopted by the big brother GTAs. Hopefully RDR changed R*Norths perception on many of the little aides.
I'd play through them all again if they came out with a "HD collection" with updated controls (including the Stories games). And the controls are a HUGE deal for me.
