I just hope Rockstar swings the balance away from 'realism' and back to fun for the next GTA.
Grand Theft Auto III
Game » consists of 28 releases. Released Oct 23, 2001
The third release in the Grand Theft Auto Franchise stars silent criminal protagonist Claude who, after having been betrayed and left for dead, is out for revenge. It was the first GTA game in 3D, an evolution that proved to be pivotal and helped establish the franchise as one of gaming's most popular (and controversial).

I never liked GTA. After Hot Coffee, I absolutely abhorred Rockstar for tarnishing the name of video games with their trash.
Now that I'm older, I still think they should have practiced a bit more restraint and I also figured out what they were missing... about 110% of Saints Row the Third.
The mechanics in the PS2 games always felt busted. The stories were always full of tropes with just enough tongue in cheek to be slightly amusing, but to lose me in the overall mundane boredom that resulted in the halfway point. GTA IV was just a low point for me. So much ambition just for it to feel all so wrong, annoying side missions (smash that cell phone), and again, over staying its welcome.
I only just warmed up to them with Red Dead Redemption. I am very displeased on how they are handling GTAV. Looks graphically great, but same washed up gangster story? I am really hoping for a "gotcha" twist... really. Or maybe just Saints Row 4 because, well... you know, VIDEO GAMES.
Are you serious, or trolling?
Dead serious. Grand Theft Auto does absolutely nothing for me. Put many hours into III, Vice City, San Andreas, and IV giving them an honest effort to try and understand what people liked. I don't see the wow factor, the most fun friends and folks always told me was plugging in cheat codes and doing stupid crap.
Then game Saints Row which made that the objective. Still was a bit to "gang banger kinda serious w/e" until the lovely Third one. I played it straight, putting down Skyrim to do so (was already 70 hours deep into that one). The other games that were close to that were Just Cause 2 (surfing jets, hell yes!) and Red Faction Guerrilla.
I just don't "get" it and probably never will. And trust me, I like a wide variety of games.
I have clocked many many many hours of my youth playing the GTA series and it does hold a special place in my heart. I'm a bit skeptical about 5 as Saints Row the Third did about a hundred things I wish the GTA games had been doing for years. Many gameplay elements Saints Row 3 does completley brings new life to the open world crime game. Little things like always having a parachute, to being able to have infinite rockets in a flying vehicle. Those among many other things have made me a fan of Saints Row's future games. I played nearly 100 hours of 4 when it came out and loved it, but 5 is gonna have to add a lot more to get me interested in a serious open world crime game again! I hope for a better main character as I haven't liked any of them since the silent Claude!

@FoxMulder: Just Cause 2 gave you unlimited parachutes.
I guess it did, but I never played it. I was refering more to the GTA style urban crime setting than just in sandbox games in general.
Man that dodo was so difficult to control. I bought the GTA collection on Steam recently, maybe I should install it and play it again.
This is weird, I always thought GTA III came out before 9/11. I want to say right after I move to my new town, I remember playing it with my brother before 9/11. My mind must be going places.

I just figured that for a Chinatown reference.
Huh, can't believe I didn't ever notice that the EU and US versions had different covers. Still kinda prefer the EU one though, but then again, I'm most likely a bit biased!

I didn't even know the cover art was different in the US release. The GTA3 cover is probably one of my favourites.
For once I actually prefer the US boxart.
I second that notion. It's TONS better than another Americanized piece of box art we all know and HATE.

Uh, I didn't really expect it to have a big script at all. The main character doesn't even talk.
The script on the right is GTAIV, the one on the left is GTA III.
I think it's fascinating to see some of those details. The script image is really interesting just to see how far things have come since then. And for it's day, GTA had alot of dialogue. The only other game I would imagine had a larger script, maybe closer to that GTA IV script, would have had to been Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty.

I believe that the photo is trying to suggest that there are not that many pages of exact dialogue but instead general guidelines of a scene that the actors could have then improvised or filled in the necessary blanks with perhaps the writer, director, or others. I don't know if this is what was done or even sufficient enough to work but it did seem that the script of gta iv tried to be tighter and more effective but iii was kinda pulpy in a way.
