I now expect games to have tutorials at the start of games, thus making the instruction guide great toliet reading.

I often read manuals before playing. As such, I end up skipping tutorials.

I used to, but nowadays most instruction guides are just "PRESS X TO ATTACK" (there are, of course exceptions). In the good old days they contained tons of character bios and lore.

I used to read them when If I was out shopping with my parents, and then I bought a game I'd open the box and read it on the way home in anticipation.

I've been surprised by what I'd find in a manual in the past.

They are great toilet reading. Sometimes I'd flick through one and go: "Shit! I totally forgot I could do that!"

Nope.  I expect tutorials nowadays.  Game manuals are an archaic way of communicating how the game is played.

Sometimes flick through them when waiting for the game to load. Most of the time they're unnecessary, some times they're helpful for games with unexplained facets - like Fifa 10 for example.

Nope. I've never read 'em. I figure all the important stuff (controls, gameplay mechanics, etc.) will be explained in-game, so why waste my time reading the manual?

Back before tutorials I used to. Nowadays not so much except for the rare game that doesn't have a tutorial. I feel like instruction booklets have gotten lazier though, I find even with games that lack tutorials they don't give you all the info.

It's like a CD insert for music, something that's nice in the case but something that I'll never read and is ultimately inconsequential.  If I have to actually read your instruction manual, than your tutorials sucked.  Nice for quick reference sometimes, and every once in a while I read it and forget about some gameplay mechanic that will make my life easier.

I like the static nature that complements tutorials well. I like a game that tells you the basics in the tutorial and has a booklet with reference to all the advanced controls that you might forget and need later.

I do, but usually as supplementary material.  I usually count on the game to actually teach me how to play.
I've also noticed that manuals are getting slimmer and slimmer this generation.  It's kinda sad.

If I buy a boxed game, I read the entire manual before starting the game.

But I haven't bought a boxed game in years.
