Gachapin (ガチャピン) was first created in the 1970s for the children's television program Hirake! Ponkikki (ひらけ!ポンキッキ). Since then, he has become a Japanese pop culture staple appearing in many television programs and video games.
Outside of Japan, he remains relatively unknown, save for a small guest appearance in in the "Read My Mind" music video for American rock band The Killers. His upcoming appearance in the game Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth is far from his first video game appearance, but is far more notable for giving the character greater international exposure.
