Thinking about having another blast on either Morrowind or Oblivion and was interested in peoples opinions about which they prefer.
Morrowind or Oblivion?
Morrowind. I could argue for this but I can't muster the mental energy to go into everything that's wrong with Oblivion. Level scaling and the uber-generic fantasy setting are probably the main dealbreakers, but I dislike pretty much everything about it.
@The_Laughing_Man: Cheers, have never really had a look at the modding scene for Morrowind for some reason, i'll have a look! Not sure where you can find them anymore, but look for the Tireless Running and Magicka Regeneration mods. Trust me, those'll make the game about 10x more enjoyable.

While I do like some of the gameplay changes in Oblivion -- namely melee attacks not whiffing when they clearly should hit, innate Magicka regeneration, Lockpick/Speechcraft skills which don't just involve repeatedly clicking without major input, etc. -- Morrowind is still the top-dog merely because of the environment.
Vvardenfell just has something going for it that Cyrodiil misses out on. Cyrodiil just mainly came across as rather generic, like it could have been from any fantasy game -- Vvardenfell actually had a sense of character. There were loads of interesting aspects deep in the backstory that I absolutely adore: the way the native inhabitants are desperately struggling to hold onto their old beliefs, while the Imperial influence slowly spreads through the isle. The way that there were some Dunmer who categorically despised you, just because you were a foreigner. The whole history behind the Battle of Red Mountain, with the different accounts of what actually transpired when the Tribunal became Gods. The vagueness of the Nerevarine prophecies, and that late-game realisation that arises once you finally work out just what Azura had been up to all this time. It all adds up to make a wonderfully rich world to live in.
It's still a clumsy-ass game to play, and there's loads of things that are a pain in the arse, but it's just a joy to experience the world.
I've only seen a video review of Morrowind and it looks.. old and freaky.
I vote Oblivion, i enjoyed it (before it started crashing. should fix that soon)
I actually like Daggerfall better than both of those games. I just wished that I could have played it when it came out. If I had any idea games like that existed at that time, my gaming experience would have been way different.

Anyone who said Oblivion should get Corprus disease.
Anyone who said Morrowind should be dragged screaming into the Deadlands.

oh noes! i hate being dragged through endless generic "hell" environments, it's so fucking boring. surely a fate worse than death.
I say Morrowind, but they are both great games.
Vanilla Oblivion is maybe not as good a game and feels very generic, but with mods they both offer a marvelous experience..
Why not play Morrowind and then Oblivion ? ;)

At least Oblivion was actually something resembling a game that ANYONE could play, not a pen n paper RPG simulator like Morrowind.

that argument would be valid if the question was which is easier. Ease of access does not contribute to the quality of a game. Also it's not rocket science (or eve online). You just have to be able to read.
@zoskia: How about the fact that I can't stand it when I whack something over the head with a weapon only to see "miss"? Or the fact that enchanting was bullshit in Morrowind?
I'm astounded by the amount of Oblivion hate I see on a regular basis. And I'm even more astounded by all the Morrowind love. I really dug that game and played it for a very long time, but ultimately the lack of personality to the NPCs made the game feel more like an RPG simulator than an RPG game.
Oblivion, however, utterly blew my mind with the level of personality it had, even with all the annoying mainstream-friendly choices they made for the game.
People complain a bout Oblivion's glitchy-ness, but honestly, I EXPECT my RPGs to be glitchy. If it's not, that means they haven't pushed the hardware and engine hard enough from an interactivity standpoint.
The only people who like Oblvion more than Morrowind...are people who didn't play Morrowind first if at all.
I never played the Morrowind games, and the disgusting faces and animations of all the characters in Oblivion destroyed that game for me. I have my hopes for Skyrim since it looks like they fixed those problems. So whatever world that takes place in.
Having now played both, I can say with some confidence, Oblivion. Morrowind is great in its own way, but also has (plenty of) its own problems. They're both great and different and similar all at the same time. But I still prefer Oblivion.

Oblivion, although I haven't played Morrowind all that much so I suppose I can't make a fair suggestion. I've only read a few comments, but I'm going to assume most people are saying Morrowind. Even though there are currently more people who chose Oblivion, the general consensus seems to be that Morrowind is the greatest thing ever made and Oblivion and anyone who likes it should be destroyed. Color me surprised.
