These are the characters who prefer to walk through life without anyone by their side, even though many times they will still wind up as part of a team. They tend to be rough around the edges in order to try and push others away.
A love triangle is when three (or more) people are in some kind of romantic relationship with each other. They can become messy and complicated. It may or may not be competitive.
Games that feature an antagonist--someone who opposes the game's protagonist--that is a man.
Marriage is when characters, typically a pair of them, are joined in loving (or not so loving) matrimony!
These games have an agenda - social, political, or otherwise. The message is hard to miss.
A box, chest, or similar reward beckons you to come near, but it is actually an enemy in disguise. Sometimes can be difficult to differentiate from a real treasure chest.
A cloud of gas, often used as an energy source in RPGs.
A software used for video compaction on Nintendo handheld games.
A list of common "steps" that take place in every heroic story. Joseph Campbell proposed that it is a metaphor for the transition into adulthood.
A post processing effect that blurs and streaks the entire frame. Loosely based on the behavior of real-world optics.
Sometimes one playable character just isn't enough.
Characters that are initially portrayed as evil, but eventually turn out to be good or not as serious of a threat. This also includes villains who remain evil the entire game, but contain some sense of moral goodness or ambiguity.
Mostly found in RPGs, these are status ailments that continue outside of battle.
A narrative that takes an unexpected turn. Commonly, plot twists come in the form of revealing that the player character is not actually who they thought.
The political thriller is a story, often action-oriented, that tends to revolve around two or more nations struggling to gain power. Outcomes are usually found through military confrontations, covert wars, and back alley negotiating.
These are the characters who may or may not wind up in a relationship with the protagonist of the game. Sometimes the player gets to choose if this relationship will develop, while in other instances it is just left up to your imagination at the end of the game.
In a number of games, characters often talk about friendship and the importance of friends, some sacrificing themselves for one another.
Games that make records. Often records like most played game, or critically acclaimed. There have been gaming records since the says of Pong and the Magnavox Oddysey.
A red herring is a plot device used to mislead or distract someone from what's really going on in the story. It could be a false clue or over-emphasis of another character. Red herrings can add a surprise or make a challenge tougher.
Whether you've done some bad things in the past, or inadvertently helped open up a portal that unleashed an army of aliens that would destroy the world, video game heroes have countlessly fought for that one loftiest of goals, redemption.
Often appearing in role-playing games, the reluctant hero starts out not wanting to fight, but ends up getting drawn into the conflict nonetheless. If not forced into it against their will, they are often motivated by love, honor, or a sense of righteousness.
A broad spectrum of games can be described as remakes, from straightforward graphical overhauls to extensive revision of gameplay and story elements. In the most basic sense, a remake keeps the original's core gameplay and plot but makes significant changes to peripheral aspects.
Classic form of numbering that gives things a more regal feel.
Romance in video games can either be interactive, in which the player attempts to woo another character, or an unchangeable part of the story of a given game.
Many games feature a story which involves saving the world and its inhabitants, often single handedly.
An animated transition that is used to switch from one screen to another.
Sometimes, things are just meant to happen the way they do. Usually triggered by a timer, or by the player crossing a checkpoint.
Characters that harbor their past even though it may be revealed later. They are commonly uncovered in a number of video games.
A sequel (also called a follow-up) is a game that carries forward the gameplay concepts, and often the story, of a previous game to which it is officially linked.
An intimate physical activity between two or more individuals.
