    False Identity

    Concept »

Somewhat of a cross between Amnesia and Insanity, this is where a character replaces their own real original identity with a new false identity (i.e. a false reality/persona/memories), usually caused by either internal psychological trauma or external brainwashing.

    Short summary describing this concept.

One of the earliest and best known examples of this trope is in the role-playing game Final Fantasy VII (1997), exhibited by its lead protagonist Cloud Strife in a major plot twist. This trope was also later used to surprising effect in games such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (2001), Silent Hill 2 (2001), and BioShock (2007), and films such as The Sixth Sense (1999), Fight Club (1999), Memento (2000), The Others (2001), and Shutter Island (2010).
