@paulunga: I remember completing FF7 for the first time and sitting at the end votex screen after the end movie for 30 mins cause i thought it didnt end!
EarthBound
Game » consists of 11 releases. Released Aug 27, 1994
A 1994 role-playing game starring a young boy named Ness on his quest to save the world. The game and its quirky humor have garnered a dedicated cult following among RPG fans.
This Is the Way the World Ends
The moment sort of lost its impact for me because on my first playthrough my friend decided to enter my name as "Hugh G. Rection."
If I were a theist, I would pray to receive power from Hugh G Rection. I would probably pray for a Hugh G Rection to show up on the spot.
But I can't believe you didn't explore the world on your own! That was one of my favorite things to do when I was a kid at the end of the game. Finish off your Fuzzy Pickles collection! You can drop Paula off, pick up your long-lost bike, and ride it everywhere! Granted, when I was a kid I had a lot more time to waste doing that nonsense.
Patrick missed out on this.
I'm really happy to see Earthbound get a second life on the Wii U. Mother 3 is next... hopefully. Excellent article, Patrick!
Congratulations on your win, Patrick! Thanks for writing this article. I enjoyed reflecting on my time with Earthbound... and FF7 too. My battle with Sephiroth ended with me having Cait Sith in one of my parties and rolling a triple fail with his limit break.
Time to boot up the far superior Mother 3.
Yep.
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I don't know. They're so different.
An amazing piece on a truly amazing game. Well done Patrick, I'm glad you got the chance to experience this weird little game that still has a place in all of our hearts.
Man, just hearing someone mention the ending of Earthbound gets me fuckin' misty-eyed.
It's heartwarming as shit!
.
I wonder if my SNES cart would still hold a save long enough to play it.
I've still never beaten Earthbound on my own... gotta get on that. I think you just inspired me though, it is a beautiful game that holds up so well. This was a pleasure to read.
I had just recently beat this game myself, just the other day. I never had a SNES growing up so i've been kind of going through all the great games my friends had but i missed out on. First was Super Metroid, then Earthbound and now that i've beaten that i'm moving on to Lost Vikings. Earthbound was incredible and is easily in my top games i have ever played, i can't believe no one i knew had ever told me about it before.
Time to boot up the far superior Mother 3.
Fuckin' seriously. Mother 3 is so so so much better than Earthbound.
And that's saying a lot on account of EarthBound being so stellar.
Anyway this is pushing me towards playing Final Fantasy V, the fan translation of the SNES game and the GBA version sound really nice. Maybe after Watch Dogs or whatever is the last must play of the year.
My favorite game of all time. I'm so glad to see it get some love here. Just hearing the music floods back memories from 12 year old Chris. It hit at a time in a kid's life when he starts wondering what's outside the front door and pushing his boundaries. Like the game though, you can't go too far at that age without the help of your family and friends. Now that I'm knocking on 30 and have a family of my own and live on the opposite side of the state from the one that raised me, I still think about curing 'homesickness' like in Earthbound, but this age it's with my mom over Skype while we play Animal Crossing. Such a deep influence on my perception of what it means to make it through life, and to remember those important to you at the end of the day.
That's cool! I wish I could play Animal Crossing with my mom over Skype.
I played Earthbound without a strategy guide back in 1996.
The prayer moment was incredibly profound, as it was quite literally a last ditch thing. I had used all of my healing items, I was out of stuff to restore PP. Everybody but Paula and maybe Ness was dead.
Prayer was the only thing I had left. I knew it did random things, like cause negative status effects, but I also knew it could heal you or even bring party members back to life. And so, I prayed. And prayed. And prayed.
Such a wonderful game.
@sinusoidal: Sounds to me like you've already had all of the game's surprises spoiled for you. No wonder you aren't finding the game quite as captivating - you've already spent all of its magic. :P
@blazehedgehog: It's a bit hard to avoid spoilers for a 20 year old game. Though the first time I played it, I knew almost nothing about it.
I came to read this after hearing you reference it in the "Earthbound: Encyclopedia Bombastica." I just want to mention that your writing is captivating, and having played through Earthbound recently, I really appreciated all the nuance you talked about in your editorial.
Really great write up, I remember beating this game on the SNES waaay back in the day... it was the most emotional experience I'd ever had with a video game... gives me goosebumps to think about it to this day. In fact... I wrote a song that's loosely based on Earthbound... I think it's relevant - music.lorenradis.com/track/the-runaway
