Decent Game, Lackluster Polish
While there's been a lot of talk about the control scheme utterly sucking on the PC; I hadn't really heard anyone talking about the controls for the console. While most aspects of gameplay are fine (mash the button) there are some particulars that just don't feel 100% such as picking up loot, running up against odd boundaries and combat targeting.
When you kill some mobs, there is invariably loot that drops. Some of this loot (not gold) is an object you can optionally pick up. You do this using the right button (right shoulder button) and you really have to target these items just right to get them to register. This should just be automatic; run over loot - pick it up.
The same problem occurs with the antiquated save-points throughout the game. You have to be standing "just so" to get it to activate. Doors and other "action items" also suffer.
Overall, even with the gamma set to the maximum; the game is far too dark. Some regions you feel as though you're just stumbling through a long dark corridor with no mobs or anything to make things interesting. When you do have fights in some of these dark corridors; the wretched camera controls make it difficult to see that debris is blocking your way. These kinds of boundary problems would have been significantly lessened if they had chosen a better, more vibrant or contrast-filled color scheme in general.
The music in the game is the one saving grace; the music and audio quality in general is without peer.
It's a great way to pass the time, but I don't think I could recommend it over some of the classics in this genre (including the older DS games on the PC.)
