The Duke is not dead. Yet. If all goes well--and really there's no telling how something will turn out when 3D Realms is behind the wheel--Duke Nukem will be making another appearance over Xbox Live Arcade. The official Xbox website has listed Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project as a release over the digital games service, citing 3D Realms as the developer.

Manhattan Project isn't a new game, nor is it a standard Duke romp. It's a 24-level, New York-set side-scroller which originally hit the PC in 2002 courtesy of Sunstorm Interactive (with a 3D Realms overhead). The game got a decent amount of critical buzz around the time of its launch, but from what I gather, it lacks something critical to the success of any title: flushable toilets. The description of it, however, does mention "explosive 3-D action," which might mean you can blow up toilets--a passable substitute for flushing. Either way, I'll actually be able to confirm this a bit later since the original title is still available for download on the PC.

The Xbox page doesn't list a price or a release date for its re-release. A good guess would be "soon" and "10 bucks," but that would be assuming 3D Realms was operating in a traditional, predictable manner.

I don't even remember this existing though the idea of a Duke Nukem side scroller doesn't particularly excite me.

I hear that he wishes to both kick ass and chew some type of bubble gum, though he has come to the unfortunate realization that his package of gum is empty.

This being a side-scroller means that it's absolutely your standard Duke romp:

It's the only Duke game I ever liked. I'm actually probably going to be buying this when it comes out. Assuming it's not $15 or something ridiculous like that.

@paulunga: The original two games are side-scrolling, yes, but they featured none of the things that personified Due from Duke 3D and onwards. The original two games are the black sheep of the series, and this is the missing link between the two.

That said, I didn't much like MP, at all.

I have the original release of that game (Manhattan Project I mean, I have Duke 3d too but thats another story =P )

I didnt like it, myself. I didnt feel it was as good as the older side scrollers of duke (Ya... Duke started as a side scrolling platformer. Crazy huh?) and it wasnt the same kind of action as Duke 3d so I couldnt finish it. I may try it out again, I can play it anytime on my computer, but I dont see a need for it to re-release on Live. Really wish they could make a new game. With the way that goes with them over the past decade, though, I dont think they could even release a new Duke game for XBLA let alone a full retail game. heh, oh well

There were like, what, 6 Duke Nukem games? That'd make half of them side-scrolling and I'd say Manhattan Project is Duke going back to his roots.

With that being said, Duke Nukem (the franchise) fucking sucks. The character is one boring cliche after another and none of the games except for Duke 3D were particularly impressive when they came out. The world moved on with Valve, Bungie, Infinity Ward etc. changing what an FPS is.

@paulunga:  Duke has 10 games, and another 4 expansion packs, not including the slated for release games. That makes makes the side-scrollers the minority, by a large margin.

Also, Duke is fucking great. He's a caricature, a parody. If you are upset that he's one-dimensional, you're completely missing the point. Everything in all of those games is parody.

Might work good as a side shooter, will have to wait & see how it looks in 10 years if/when it is finally released.

Actually Brad, it's more "traditional" thank 3D was. Don't forget Duke started out as a side scroller. :)

I remember coming across this game long after ive played 3D and Time To Kill. It was pretty cool, nothing amazing or overly impressive but it was pretty fun for what it was. Id gladly play it again as long as its not ridiculously overpriced.

Oh hey, I remember that game. Pretty damn good for a "2 1/2-D" side-scroller. I really liked the de-mutation gun.

For the longest time, I had the free radiation symbol/NYC subway token keychain that came with the game on my keys.

It was a truly decent game. Kinda 2 and 1/3 d, they played that design routine with it. Weapons were the classic ones, and of course key cards and oneliners. It had some particularly good psych. type rock I remember, as well as a  plus music score. i`ll get it for the accessability, like I have Vice city on steam.

Wasn't this delayed when it was first scheduled to come out? I seem to remember them taking out a World Trade Center level because of 9/11.
