Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
The ability to stop or reduce the damage from an oncoming attack.
A character who attacks with their buttocks. Most common in fighting games. Not to be confused with the act of attacking somebody's butt.
Also referred to as block damage, chipping takes place when characters take damage even when blocking. Most commonly associated with fighting games.
A character with the ability to copy or steal powers or weapons from their enemies.
A flashy technique that involves slashing a helpless enemy from different angles at a rapid pace. It usually involves reappearing in another position immediately after performing a strike to follow up with another attack (usually making the enemy go upwards while the performer strikes in a rising diagonal slash that zigzags upwards), or have dopplegangers attack with you.
A quick burst of speed that propels the player slightly forward or backwards.
Demons are generally creatures of evil, usually from Hell, who are often totally untrustworthy even when they're not murdering everyone and destroying everything in their path.
Generally used to fool other characters or parties into thinking you're one of them or belong there for purposes of deception, spying, or accessing data.
Games that feature an antagonist--someone who opposes the game's protagonist--that is a woman.
This concept is for games where at least one of the main characters is female.
That bad guy looks awfully familiar... probably because it's you. This is for games where you fight yourself or an evil version of yourself
Graphics in games whether backgrounds or characters that are hand drawn whether using a pen graphics tablet or a scan of a physical drawing.
Women of a religious order who commit themselves to a life style dedicated to their respective gods.
A Palette Swap is when two or more characters share the same style sprite or character model with only minor color or cosmetic changes. Although visually similar, palette swap characters may have very different moves and personalities.
Used in fighting games, projectiles are objects that a fighter can launch at another fighter to attack from a distance. While they can be used to simply inflict damage, projectiles are often used to maneuver opponents into disadvantageous positions.
Any projectile that bounces off a surface upon impact.
The ability to change shape. Humans shifting into animals is the most common type of shape shifting.
Featured mainly in fighting games, special attacks usually require more than just pressing a button to activate. They are usually unique or at least varied between characters.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
When the player character can execute a jump that is higher or farther than their normal jump. This can require holding the jump button or performing some different control input, and can be limited by energy or a cooldown.
A transformation is a different stage or form for something. Usually an upgrade.
A malevolent character whose goals are evil in nature. While villains are commonly featured as antagonists, not all antagonists are necessarily villains.
