Games where the protagonist's weapon physically displays the amount of remaining ammunition. This is commonly used to increase a game's immersiveness.
When the main protagonist is thrusted into a foreign dimension or alien world, usually due to a freak accident. The protagonist must then explore that world while trying to find a way back home.

This shows you how long you have until you start wishing you had gills. When your breath runs out, you may take damage, or you may expire right there, depending on how sadistic the game designers were!
