Published Apr 3, 2022
https://fundraise.pencilsofpromise.org/ArbitraryWater2022 Hi hello it’s once again time for me to put my body on the line to help Pencils of Promise raise money to build schools in the developing world. As always, my brand has become a garbage hell nightmare where I can only approach things in terms of randomized wheels of weird, questionable, and obscure video games. I will not apologize for t...

Indie Game of the Week 263: Inbento
Published Apr 1, 2022
One mistake I keep making with puzzle games is conflating the presentation with its challenge level. Specifically, the way most puzzle games endeavor to swaddle its audience of mostly casual players in a warm and welcoming atmosphere and simple, intuitive UIs built for devices of any size and power, and how that's never any indication as to how much hair-pulling may or may not be involved as it...

64 in 64: Episode 8
Published Mar 27, 2022
We have a Man-crazy episode for you all this week on 64 in 64 , highlighting the best and less-best of the Nintendo 64 library as it enters a new age of appreciation via Nintendo Switch Online and its pricy Expansion Pack tier. Dropping a monthly sub on anything requires some proof of value, so I'm doing ol' Ninty-Tendy a favor by evaluating all the games that defined their divisive fogbox to n...

Count Your Sheep Before They Hatch
Published Mar 27, 2022
And by "hatch" I mean "are made unavailable for purchase due to the closure of the 3DS eShop". Sleep Clock , a DSiWare app, is the best alarm clock I've ever used. How good is it? I wrote about it in 2014 when I started using it and I've legitimately used it every single day since. It's the only alarm that hasn't eventually become annoying to me and it wakes me up immediately every time I use i...

Indie Game of the Week 262: Vaporum: Lockdown
Published Mar 25, 2022
Prepare all your best Xbox Series X hardware jokes because we're gonna get vaporous this week. Vaporum: Lockdown is a sequel (or prequel, or interquel, or something) of 2017's Vaporum by Slovakian studio Fatbot Games , which I covered a couple of years back ( IGotW #155 ). A steampunk-themed, first-person, single-character dungeon-crawler with real-time combat and movement and an emphasis on us...

Fighting Final Fantasy XIII-2 - Episode 2: Sometimes... You Just Want To Play Something Incredibly Dumb.
Published Mar 25, 2022
Author's Note: Hey everyone, this episode has been delayed for several reasons, the least of which include me getting some of the worst writer's block I have had in a while. Nonetheless, when I finally buckled down to write the second episode, I realized it would be best to break apart the first and second half of the game into two parts instead of smushing all of the game's insane story into a...

Tunic Is A Special Game
Published Mar 23, 2022
Tunic Is So Much More Than a Zelda Clone Tunic is an Isometric Action-Adventure game that is clearly inspired by old-school Zelda games; the main character, a fox, is donning his best Link cosplay, you wake up and must find a weapon and shield, and solve a fair amount of environmental puzzles. As someone who recently beat their first Zelda game, ever; the Switch remake of The Legend of Zelda: L...

I’ve expanded my map quite a bit and have even defeated not one but two ‘big bads’; Godrick the grafted and Rennala Queen of the Full Moon. 64 in 64: Episode 7
Published Mar 20, 2022
Spring is finally here and what better way to celebrate the season's promise of renewal and brighter days than spending hours cooped up in one's room playing twenty-year-old also-rans? That's just one aspect of what we do here on 64 in 64 , an episodic exploration of the library of the Nintendo 64 , but one that's particularly relevant today with its two clunkers. After all, if I don't evaluate...

Lo-Fi Plays III: Six More Tiny Game Reviews
Published Mar 20, 2022
Most games that come out receive little to no coverage because they are obscure, low production titles that go unmarketed. This blog series is an attempt to open the curtains on that underserved corner of the medium. Each time, I'll look at six different pint-sized indie games and report on what they are and where they excel. So let's get into it. Friday Night Funkin' First off, perfect name. S...

The Wheel of Ukraineous Video Games 01-02: Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments and Darkened Skye
Published Mar 18, 2022
Hello, and welcome to The Wheel of Ukraineous Video Games, a celebration of video games made in the sovereign nation of Ukraine, partially borne out of frustration at my own powerlessness and partially borne by my personal brand being the hell garbage nightmare I've let it become. Indie Game of the Week 261: Kelvin and the Infamous Machine
Published Mar 17, 2022
I'd like to think I'm a video game polymath here at the Indie Game of the Week Institute for Weekly Indie Game Examinations but truth be told I have my handful of pet genres and the Indie industry, dutifully, never seems to stop working within them. This week the not-so-dubious-wheel has moved back around to "'90s humorous point-and-click adventure game" and, with it, Kelvin and the Infamous Ma...
