Tag Force 4 is the first game in its series set in the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5Ds series. *So I am in the middle of a Yu-Gi-Oh! binge, and I figured that I don’t want to let this enthusiasm go to waste. Therefore, I am going to try and write a few blog posts about certain games from that franchise that I have fond memories of. I am also writing under the assumption that you, dear reader, have the basic rule...

Log Eater – Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker HD I’ve been getting into Metal Gear again recently, having played through MGS 1-3, and since 4 still isn’t available outside the PS3 I watched the Metal Gear Scanlon playthrough of it (is it just me or does that game look really bad based on current standards?). I wanted to play MGS 5 for a long time (and then to Death Stranding), but some part of my...

Mass Effect 2. Holy shit was this game basically Mass Effect 2. From its focus on recruiting and preparing a team for a final rush against a big bad enemy, to the aesthetics of the Zeniths to its final reveal of an enemy that is more or less just the Reapers . Now don't get me wrong, I like Mass Effect 2, so this is not entirely a criticism. I would also say that one major aspect of Mass Effect...

Note: The following article contains significant spoilers for Bioshock, Virginia, and Paratopic. The games community has had ahold of the phrase "environmental storytelling" for a good decade and a half. It was thrust into our lexicon in the late 00s and early 10s with launch pads like Bioshock and Gone Home: thrillers that immaculately married place and history. "Environmental storytelling" is...

When it comes to video games I'm a frequent saver. I grew up in a time where autosaving was far from the norm, and playing my share of dastardly early PC games that were more than happy to kill you out of nowhere or drop you into an unwinnable situation meant that I got into the habit of saving frequently and keeping at least a few backups around in case surrendering an hour of progress was a m...

This week we'll be covering Eastward , by Chinese developers Pixpil . Not to be confused with Eastwood— the arcade maze game based on the ornery actor's life that I kept getting lost in, even after going any which way I could—Eastward is a game that feels stylistically and narratively inspired by Mother 3 but mechanically inspired by the Legend of Zelda games which, honestly, is a promising com...

Last time in the intro post, we interrogated the concept of the 3DO and looked at the pack-in launch title, Crash n' Burn . This time, we begin our alphabetical trip through 1993 with Battle Chess , Crime Patrol , Dragon's Lair , and Escape From Monster Manor . ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Battle Chess Developer: Krisalis S...

Jaseiken Necromancer Developer/Publisher: Hudson | 22 January 1988 (JP) Foreknowledge Early in this project I alluded to just how complicated the PC Engine platform looks to an outsider. It has an 8 bit central processor with 16-bit graphics processing. It has multiple variants, some of which include minor chip variations while others include CD-ROM units and different BIOS revisions. Those CD-...

Yuuuup, talkin' 'bout Bugsnax this week. The sophomore release from Young Horses , they of Octodad fame, Bugsnax puts you in the... well, the Grumpuses don't really wear shoes, but you occupy the role of a journalist fond of cryptids that is encouraged by a prominent explorer, Lizbert Megafig, to visit her expedition on Snaktooth Island: home to a miraculous menagerie of half-bug, half-snack cr...

At the end of 2022 I had a bunch of games that I wanted to either finish or play, from that year and before. I never got to Horizon Forbidden West or God of War Ragnarok (despite the 2019 GoW game being my second favorite game of all time) because I still had unfinished business in the first games of those series but couldn't find time to complete it. I had a bunch of big games from 2022 that I...

Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon was a game I always knew I would love but never got around to. I don’t know if other people have games like this, that they are confident they will enjoy but never find the time to play, but it’s pretty common for me. For Blood Dragon the reason was that both it and the base Far Cry 3 had a reputation of being awful on console. They launched during that awkward period rig...

Game : Matthias Linda 's Chained Echoes . Release Month : December. Quick Look : N/A. Started : 30/01. Completed : ???. I wish I could say I saved this one for last because I had the highest hopes for it or was intending to end on a showstopper, but really it's because there was no way I was going to finish a decently-sized RPG and still have room for all of the other nineteen games on the GOTY...

I just finished Farcry Primal. That's notable because I actually started the game in February 2016, when it launched. Based on my achievements I seem to have dipped back in during 2017 and 2018 before putting it down for about 5 years (I may have picked it up very briefly in the intervening years but not played enough to get an achievement) and then finishing it in 2023. Why did I bother? Well...

Game : Hiding Spot Games 's Beacon Pines . Release Month : September. Quick Look : N/A. Started : 28/01. Completed : 29/01. There's much about 2022's video game bona fides I've yet to discover for myself—my parsimonious nature rarely lets me buy games new—but I think it's safe to say that as far as adventure games go it was an exceptional year, whether your poison is for traditional point-and-c...

Book report on Metal Gear Solid by Raymond Benson The notes I took for this is almost 3 years old. During the initial pandemic related lockdown, yours truly took the chance to read every science fiction novel on their book shelf. Some real bangers if “Hugo Award winner” is your jam. Then there is this airport thriller ass airport thriller. I somehow took 6 pages worth of notes and now unleash i...
