Welcome back, all you Sega crazies and CDs nuts, to another update to Mega Archive CD: a chronological look at the Sega CD/Mega-CD library as I work on sprucing up their Giant Bomb wiki pages. We've passed Halloween '93 in the standard Mega Archive series so now it's time to do the same for our reflective friends in Mega Archive CD. This group of nine has everything you've come to expect from t...

Note: The following article contains major spoilers for Cocoon and minor spoilers for Gorogoa. Now and then, a game gets so popular within its niche that its magnetic field stretches beyond its genre's devotees, attracting players from across gaming's wide spectrum. Super Smash Bros. did this as a fighting game, The Last of Us did it in the narrative drama sector, and it's happened myriad times...

Welcome all to another edition of Indie Game of the Week where we dare to go far, far outside of our gaming comfort zones in pursuit of the unknown and the untested. My daring choice this time is an explormer that has Souls tendencies; not something I tend to cover all the time on here, nope. This goof really kinda hinges on the assumption that I have regular readers and aren't just being rando...

Hello Everyone, Who need's sleep? Certainly not me....... I am here to announce that I will once again be taking part in the Giant Bomb Community Endurance run this year. This will be my 9th year participating in the event which at first made me feel a little old but that’s okay because as it turns out I actually am old. Last year with support from people like you I was able to raise $ 1,266.00...

I have a problem: I haven’t been able to put my Playdate down for the last few weeks. It’s a good problem to have. The Playdate isn’t a new purchase; I pre-ordered one and received it back in 2022. I can’t resist the latest gadgets and I’m a sucker for new methods of control in games. A charming small portable in an eye-catching yellow with a crank: yes please! It looked neat and that’s exactly...

There's a story making the rounds (originally from a place called Newzoo) that market research shows that 60% of console and PC game time is being spent on live service games that have been around for more than half a decade, and in general gametime has consolidated around a small number of releases, making the gaming industry even more of a feast or famine proposition than it ever was before....

Let's Set The Scene Is this the Kinect of a new generation? Around mid-March 2024, Bloomberg reported that Sony was "pausing" production of the PSVR2 due to unmoving inventory . As indicated in their report, Bloomberg showed that the PSVR2 has consistently declined in overall sales since its launch, despite other competitors (i.e., Meta) within the VR market seeing the opposite trend with their...

One of the most significant, yet often overlooked aspects of retro gaming is the innovation of the difficulty curve. The difficulty curve can be visualized in a 2D graph and refers to the gradual increase (or decrease) in challenge level as the player(s) progresses through a game. It keeps players engaged and ensures a sense of progression and accomplishment as they overcome increasingly toughe...

Over the last decade and a half, the breakout stars of the puzzle genre have tended to be those titles that stun on sight. The showmen with core mechanics you can understand from the briefest flash, but that bend both reality and your mind. There is the Lego rule-rewriting of Baba Is You, self-cloning in The Swapper, the subjective resizing of objects in Superliminal, the time loops of Outer Wi...

Alone with my Snark Remember when video games were good? No? Maybe we've moved on and have made better things? Where are you going? I had to be the one to do this. As the internet man whose current internet brand is “Playing bad horror games” I’m gonna be the guy that has a take about the Alone in the Dark reboot. Despite being delayed twice to avoid competing with heavier hitters, THQ Nordic s...

Welcome back to another Indie Game of the Week where this time we're taking a break in the ol' Casual Corner with the wholesome organizational puzzle game A Little to the Left . Now, if you were to ask me which game best served as a paean to one's OCD tendencies I'd probably point to Donkey Kong 64 and its vast pile of banana-flavored junk to collect—and I'm not comfortable with how many times...

Pictured: Embracer entering the games industry (source: news dot xbox dot com) When I started this series in 2022, it was to resurrect a defunct feature of Game of the Year discussions that I’ve enjoyed in the past. After 2023 and 2024 so far, it’s clear why Giant Bomb staff past and present shelved it. The real winner of Hottest Mess in the game industry is the forces that continuously abuse,...

In which my criticism and appreciation for the Matrix Resurrections are expressed The world had changed a lot in the time between 2003 and 2021. The Wachowskis had their gender resignments separately. Keanu Reeves had some highs and lows before he returned to the high of “being inseparable from a film franchise” with the John Wick flicks. Yours truly had turned from “chasing that ‘cutting edge’...

Double Feature: The Matrix Reloaded and Revolutions “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become a villain.” Thank you, Mr. Jonathan Nolan, yours truly always have a fondness for your bullshit. Though I can only see the part after that comma applying to Hollywood. After the Matrix became a surprise hit in 1999, how would its benefactor Warner handle its sequel(s)? The...

Contra: Operation Galuga has garnered mixed reviews upon release, and seems to have been disappointing for a Wayforward project, though not out of character for a modern Konami game. Personally I think the graphics are pretty ugly and the gameplay looks a little...off for lack of a better word. It's a wait for sale for me. But I'll be waiting a long time because the game launched at $40 (with a...

Preamble Well, this is certainly embarrassing. It's been almost a month since February's Next Fest event ended and I'm only now getting around to wrapping up my thoughts about the most prominent demos I played during the event. Since I published the first part to this series, some of the game's described in this post have released. Between getting a serious cold which has, as of the publishing...

Risk/reward or risk vs reward can be defined as a main ingredient in games, in that you tend to have to take a risk to overcome an obstacle in the first place, such as getting in the enemy's line of sight/attack range to be able to shoot it or hit it, or stronger blows being harder to land. Without this tension, there's no excitement and no fun, so it's a necessary ingredient for action games e...

It felt as if yesterday when the 1999 movie was the new hotness mimicked by many. Back in 2019, this movie’s 20 th anniversary was celebrated more, in noticeable or otherwise ways. The most...
