We're back to socking bizarre chimeras on the snoot in Zeno Clash II , the hit (in more ways than one) Indie game from... 2013? How long have I been sitting on this review? All right, so full disclosure here: I had ACE Team 's first-person brawler sequel on my list for the May feature I did this year , which saw me return to many games I had to put down over the years because my then-current sy...

This year has been a weird one for me and gaming. I had a period where I wasn't enjoying games much , which is unusual for me, and in general I've played less than I have in recent years. That's not a bad thing per se, and probably has to do with life normalizing somewhat for me after the pandemic and its after-effects. But while I'm fine with spending less time gaming one unusual thing I've no...

Film review: Pacific Rim (2013) Teaser poster for the movie featuring “hero mecha” Gipsy Danger. The blu-ray on my shelf has this as its cover. …“Best New IP”…sounds like shit. ----Jeff Grestmann on why Giant Bomb’s GOTY category “Best Debut” was called that Whole those formerly of Giant Bomb used the D word to deny business bullshitting, I only used it in the title above just to delay such unp...

Taking a break from exploration platformers for a while, and you better believe it'll be a short one, I've decided to return to what I've always felt is the grandfather of the modern Indie game movement: puzzle-platformers. Beautifully rendered worlds, melancholic story delivery, pretentiousness thankfully optional: the humble puzzle-platformer usually creates a novel set of mechanics and an in...

I play a lot of video games by any objective standards. That being said, I, like literally everybody else, cannot play all the games, and I can't match the playtime of people who put in 5-8 hours a day, at least not on a regular basis. I'm more of a 15-20 hours a week type of player, sometimes significantly more, sometimes significantly less. But while I can't play every game, I would say that...

AKA Ranking of DOOMs Part Six All Caps When You Spell the Game's Name I think the title kind of gives the game away, here – sorry about that, but if we’re going to talk about DOOM – and unlike with DOOM 2016 I refuse to put (1993) next to its name all the time because fuck you, it was first and you know what the hell I am talking about – we are going to state the truth up front in the headline...

If you clicked on my last blog , you read me relating how video games slowly fell out of love with leaderboards, but the mechanic and the medium don't have to be on bad terms. Player rankings aren't right for every game, but they might be right for you, and when I see a drab implementation of them, it's not because the concept is universally bad. It's that games have priorities that don't alway...

You might be asking "how will he justify choosing yet another explormer for Indie Game of the Week this time?" and my answer is... I won't. I can't. I refuse to. People keep making these things and my impulse control is trash. Speaking of trash, but in a mostly positive tacky John Waters sort of way, we have the semi-recent Cookie Cutter : a cyberpunk story about a vengeful and murderously powe...

AKA Ranking of DOOMs Part Five I’ve Made a Huge Mistake In one of perhaps the funnier bits of good timing, I sat down to start messing with DOOM II for this entry into the Ranking of DOOMs shortly before going on a week’s vacation. This is not really what you’d call an obstacle in getting plenty of quality time in with DOOM II – just ask my brother and also my dear sweet mother, both of whom no...
