Hail and well met, followers and/or fair-weather friends of the finely-aged, to another May dedicated to retro gaming. It's the triumphant return of May Maturity for its second year! I've been knocking together these May-focused features for a while, but since starting a weekly series for Indie games, I've sort of parlayed my old Steam spring-cleaning feature into one that chases up on various...

Eighth times the charm I guess? For those of you who have been following my recent activities, you know that I was an active participant in the eighth annual "Giant Bomb Community Endurance Run." For those who are not "in the know," The Giant Bomb Community Endurance Run is a yearly spring-time charity effort. Run initially by Giant Bomb user jeffrud; Giant Bomb moderator thatpinguino currently...

The SNES Classic had a sterling assortment of games from Nintendo's 16-bit star console, but it's hardly all that system has to offer a modern audience. In each installment of this fortnightly feature, I judge two games for their suitability for a Classic successor based on four criteria, with the ultimate goal of assembling another collection of 25 SNES games that not only shine as brightly as...

It's another Monday, so it's time to see how Garflink is getting along on this increasingly forlorn The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past randomizer playthrough. If you want to know what a randomizer is and what it entails, I'd highly recommend starting with the first episode and working your way back to here, through all the highs and the lows. Mostly the latter right now. Let's not split ha...

So I'm gonna start off here with my Battletech/Mechwarrior past. My introduction to the Battletech universe was through a friend who had a roleplaying book I would look through reading about all the awesome mechs. I was pretty young at the time and never got into pen and paper roleplay. On a side note my dad and I rented Robot Jox back in the day and I love him for it, I miss renting movies bas...

Welcome to my new series, "Test Blog", where I conduct the testiest of tests over a lengthy testing period.

Despite some recent... complications, I've been having a great time with the A Link to the Past randomizer playthrough I've been chronicling. It creates new wrinkles to overcome which demand a certain level of intense familiarity with the original game to surpass, and I've been considering other games that might benefit from a similar treatment. Poking around in the dark for hours has definitel...

*Editor's Note: Norwegian classes have really kicked into gear, and most of my writing as of late has been done på norsk . This project will likely ramp up over the summer. I've also got namcompendium.com on lock and it redirects to a WordPress blog where these posts will be reblogged as an official repository. At the outset of this project I stated quite clearly that I had no intention of cons...

Sometimes I feel I set myself up for disaster with the choices I make for this feature. I've made it abundantly apparent in the past that, while I continue to give physics-based platformers such as Human: Fall Flat or Octodad: Dadliest Catch chances, I usually walk away feeling aggravated by how arbitrary they can feel and how paper-thin their gameplay is beyond "we've made it that much more aw...

With the series past the halfway point and tied 2-2, it’s a good time to look at what’s happened and where it might lead heading into Wednesday’s pivotal Game 5. 175-136. That’s the amount the Pacers have been outscored in the first half in Games 2, 3 and 4. In contrast, the Pacers have outscored the Cavaliers 153-119 in the second halves. Slow starts have hurt the Pacers in this series. While...

Hey all, I've been really overwhelmed with how many kind words you've sent my way about GB Infinite. It really has been a labor of love and I've really enjoyed adapting it and watching it grow. As with any brand new endeavor there will be missteps, broken things, and contentious features. The bottom line is, we want GB Infinite to be a fun place to hang out and talk with your fellow duders. Whe...

When I was but an infantile gamer, CD-ROM games from Humongous Entertainment were my jam. They made classics like Putt-Putt, Pajama Sam, Spy Fox and Freddi Fish. They Even made some great Blue's Clues games with an FMV Steve. These games are really nostalgic for a ton of people who love to click on things and make wacky stuff happen. Humongous stopped making games years ago, but their classics...

It's that time again! you know what they say about a guy with a big head If any of you were around for the old days at Screened, you'll recall that we used to run a contest called Box Office Winners League when we got the feeling to do so. It's a simple premise: guess how much money a movie is going to make in a given weekend, and if you're the closest guess, you win! There's a bit of skill in...

Link's latest adventure is one of his greatest to date, a game that all but changes the DNA of The Legend of Zelda franchise whilst still feeling familiar enough to satisfy even hardened fans. See that mountain? You can climb that. From the first moments Link walks out into the vast and beautiful lands of Hyrule, you know Nintendo have created something special. The Japanese developers have lon...

It's an alternate Tuesday! That means you all get a double-dose of Garflink and his quest to eat all the lasagna in Hyrule, or something equally on-brand. We're playing a special randomized seed of The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past , and you can read more about what that means by visiting the first episode of this series over yonder . Arbuckle-up, kiddos, because I'm going to take on Agah...

We're back once again with Garflink, America's favorite heroic tabby, and me, the guy who makes you go alt-tabby (wow harsh). We're still navigating a Hyrule gone mad with this The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past Randomizer playthrough, so be sure to visit here to get all caught up and then follow the links in the table at the bottom. I'll level with you: between my own half-remembered ment...

I've been thinking about ProcGen (or Procedural Generation ) again recently as it continues to be a major force in modern video gaming, and of Indie games in particular. Simply put, it's when a designer decides to relegate a certain amount of level design or treasure/NPC/enemy allocation to a randomized system, creating a doubly beneficial outcome of a game that never offers players the same ex...

I've had a dilly of a pickle of late trying to hone in on what an "Indie" game is, beyond its nominal definition of a game created by independent means in lieu of a major publisher. I think one of the biggest difficulties in figuring how to codify Indies is that they've always been around in one form or another, as far back as computer gaming has existed. In ye olden times where I apparently ha...

Hello! Been kind of a while, huh? I've not posted anything here since my GOTY stuff, and I'm sorry about that. It's not because I haven't been playing games (though I've only played a couple of 2018 releases thus far), but more because my main writing focus has still been elsewhere. Not that I really have much to show for it yet, but someday. Someday. And in the meantime, here's some good old f...

Hello there! Pre-Meme Drew and I My name’s Luis, and I like stuff! Well, it turns out a lot of people do, but I just had an urge to write about some of it. Thanks for stopping by though I really appreciate it! The way I want to do this is to have 3 separate topics (i.e. music/games/other) and keep each section limited to two things that I’m into lately. I would also like to do this at least sem...

This post can also be found at my website, GamesandGimmicks.com I'm sorry baby, I'll never treat you this way again. The Nintendo Switch is an odd little thing in my life. It's this adorable little console that sits atop of my overly priced surround sound speaker. It sits there, and waits. Waits ever patiently for me to pick it up again. Now if you're a Nintendo faithful, I want to ease your co...
