I finished Valkyria Chronicles 4 last week and decided to quickly write down some of my thoughts on the game in a hope to start a general discussion about what everyone’s opinions are now that they’ve completed it. Throughout this year I've played a bit of each mainline entry in the Valkyria Chronicles series, finishing Valkyria Chronicles 3 in the beginning of the year, replaying two thirds of...

As has become a familiar refrain for this feature: I had no idea what I was expecting after booting up Cyanide Studio 's Aarklash: Legacy for the first time, but it wasn't this. Cyanide has a somewhat sketchy reputation for their CRPGs; playing their game of Game of Thrones didn't appeal, nor have I felt an inclination to pick up Styx . Likewise, when I swept up Aarklash: Legacy for a quid and...

The SNES Classic had a sterling assortment of games from Nintendo's 16-bit star console, but it's hardly all that system has to offer a modern audience. In each installment of this fortnightly feature, I judge two games for their suitability for a Classic successor based on four criteria, with the ultimate goal of assembling another collection of 25 SNES games that not only shine as brightly as...

A few weeks ago (I think. Time has gotten increasingly difficult to keep track of as we enter the tenth year of 2018) I decided that my launch Xbox One had inexplicably desynced with my controller for the last fucking time and so would pay the price of being resigned to the dustbin of history (at least until I replace my tv and move the old one to the bedroom, and hook it back up to serve as a...

Nintendo Switch in 2017 was one of my favorite console years ever. Breath of the Wild is possibly my favorite game of all time, and Mario Odyssey was a tremendous achievement, the crowning jewel in gaming's most storied franchise. I had a great time with Fast RMX , played a host of great Neo Geo ports, and loved the hell out of both Kingdom Battle and Mario Kart 8 . There were some misses in th...

For as often as the video game community is starkly divided on issues, just now and then there will be an annoyance that unites everyone under the banner of a single position. When Valve announced in June 2018 that they would no longer curate the Steam store, the verdict from critics and consumers alike was that this was an act of cowardice on the part of Valve and a neglect of their duty as a...

This week's SatSum's going to be a little bit bottom-heavy (there is something in the trunk, but my pride prohibits me from calling it junk) so just a moderately-sized intro this time. Speaking of moderately sized... Since it comes up a little later when I talk more about Shadowrun: Hong Kong, I wanted to cover game length and how much is appropriate in what contexts. We've become inured to the...

No-one's more stoked for the coming dominance of Indie 3D platformers as I am. A few years ago, a lot of the hopes that the Indie scene would eventually progress from 2D NES and SNES platformers to revisiting the N64 era and the Rare collectathons of the late 90s were pinned on a little game in-development called A Hat in Time , with a small team of creators outlining a strong vision for a brig...

This relationship is just so.... weird? After finishing the game, I have some thoughts. Heavy Rain is an incredibly unique game, I'll give it that. I have a lot of issues with it, but I am still glad I played it. Mega Man has to gear up to take on these bosses. Switch City is BACK! (again). Which is fitting, because Mega Man is BACK! (again). Everyone's favorite blue robot had a hibernation period, then there were some games imitating the classic NES style, then there was another stretch of time where nothing happened, a sad, sad game called Mighty No. 9 , and finally here we are. When playing Mega Man...

Something I've been doing for the longest time is taking single VGM tracks from the soundtracks of video games as "sound souvenirs," or "soundvenirs," and adding them to an ever-growing shuffled playlist. I've been doing this for two reasons: first is to venerate those soundtracks that were especially great, and the second because those tracks reminded me of what it was like to play those games...

It has been a while since I played Shadowrun: Dragonfall , Harebrained Schemes 's prior outing in the cyberpunk-slash-fantasy universe of the table-top game Shadowrun , but it's both heartening and a little discouraging to discover very little has changed in Shadowrun: Hong Kong , the third and so far final entry in their Shadowrun Returns series. Obviously, there's a brand new setting - Kowloo...

It's been a couple months, and I'm back! I've been very busy working on a thing , which I may have more to say about at the end of this blog (assuming I don't get in trouble with the mods for shilling a thing), so keep reading to find out more! Regardless, I've been playing games, and I have words to say about them! Marvel's Spider-Man. Despite the fact that the box of the game only has the Mar...

Hey there folks. Daniel here, with a bit of slightly sombre news. After a few weeks of deliberation, I've decided to take a step back from this space and cut down on my Giant Bomb blogging activity. I have a few reasons for reaching this decision. First and foremost, I'm getting old, folks. Ten years ago, when this site first launched, I was eighteen, between the end of my part-time job and the...

It's the end of another quarter! You know what that means: only three months left in this bastard of a year! It also means I get to take a gander at what's coming up in the final weeks of 2018, and see if there's any last-minute additions to the GOTY discussion of which I should be cognizant. I've done a terrible job of actually playing games released in 2018, but I've plenty to go on for futur...
