Rise & Shine is an entertaining and original game that's just too short for its asking price
Published Dec 20, 2019
Rise & Shine is an incredibly short game, especially considering the $15 price. I got it for $9, mostly Microsoft Rewards money, and I’m not sure I’d recommend it at that price because it really is 90 minutes long. However, if you can find it for $5 or so what you get is a puzzle platformer with some pretty decent action elements and really nice presentation. It’s far from the best game I’ve ev...

I'm A Star Wars Nerd And Here Are Four Nerdy Nitpicks I Have For Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Published Dec 19, 2019
Author's Note: There are minor spoilers in this blog about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as well as the Star Wars films and supporting media. Preamble Alright, before we jump into the proper blog, let's set the record straight. Me and Star Wars go back. I've been consuming Star Wars media since I was old enough to play video games, and Star Wars has been a massive part of my childhood. Back in t...

GOTY 2019 - Heads in the Sand
Published Dec 15, 2019
I am going to skip the beginning of a Game of the Year list where I recap small details that have occurred in our world. I don't do this as some sort of easy out or as a way to avoid confrontation. I am doing it because I spent all of 2019 avoiding 2019. I gave it the side-eye, I engaged in "discourse" until my mouth was dry and my throat hurt from screaming, I even started working out again. I...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game Six: Electronic Super Joy II
Published Dec 15, 2019
Game : Two and Thirty Software 's Electronic Super Joy II Release Month : August Quick Look : N/A. Started : 13/12. Completed : 15/12. Remember Electronic Super Joy ? It's the one with the orgasmic checkpoints and that Quick Look where Jeff pretended to be the Franco-Hispanic-Russian game developer (the developers are Canadian, so that's like one-half out of three right). It was also a masocore...

JigglePhysx's Games Of The Year 2019
Published Dec 14, 2019
Its that time of year where we look back at the year in gaming and, as is mandated, put the best games that came out in to a 100% objective, scientifically tested, ranked list! Overall I would say that this has been a down year. When I was putting together the list of games I played this year it was remarkably short, especially compared to previous years. I have only played 20 games that I have...

Searching Far and Wide: Pokémon GO and In-Game Worlds
Published Dec 14, 2019
JRPGs are typically adventures that pit us against evil forces trying to obliterate or ruin whole realms. Yet, the way these games have often had us interact with those realms is by culling their wildlife and looting their natural resources. It's been par for the course that even when cast as heroes, we carry out behaviour similar to that of the villains: we degrade the health of the world to m...

My 2019 Game of the Year
Published Dec 14, 2019
I am going to rank the games that I have beat this year as well as the games you can't beat (it will make sense). Couple of honorary games first, DOTA 2 new patch came out having fun with it, Borderlands 1 and 2, went back and beat both of them I like 1 more than 2. 15. Links Awakening DX I wanted to play the original before the new one came out, and my god did it turn me off of me playing the...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game Five: Shovel Knight: King of Cards
Published Dec 12, 2019
Game : Yacht Club Games 's Shovel Knight: King of Cards Release Month : December Quick Look : Coming Soon? Started : 10/12. Completed : 12/12. I have to marvel at Yacht Club Games's business model. Three DLC campaigns, two of which are equally the length of the original game if not longer, and all of them free to anyone who bought the original game when it was still ostensibly in need of sales....

JeremyF's Top 10 Games of 2019
Published Dec 10, 2019
Call me crazy, but I look forward to game of the year time every December. It’s a wonderful chance to look back at the experiences that shaped my digital year and what I’ll take into the next one. I like to broadly theme each year when making these lists. The commonality between my favorite games in 2017 was powerful emotion. 2018 focused on strong design. In 2019, the theme is creativity . Mos...

My Favorite Video Game Music of 2019
Published Dec 10, 2019
It’s time again for one of my favorite personal annual traditions: looking back on the year in video game music, and sifting through my favorite soundtracks to share in a fun collection. It’s a testament to the strength of the medium that I can do this every year, and looking over this year’s list, I can’t help but marvel at the continued diversity and quality of video game music. There’s somet...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game Four: Odysseus Kosmos and His Robot Quest
Published Dec 9, 2019
Game : Pavel Kostin 's Odysseus Kosmos and His Robot Quest Release Month : April (Episode 5). Quick Look : N/A. Started : 07/12. Completed : 08/12. For the sake of this series I was checking up on the status of Kentucky Route Zero - still no news about that fifth act, alas, despite a tentative and apparently way too optimistic 2019 release date - and instead discovered that another episodic adv...

Blurred Vision: The Bizzareness of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed
Published Dec 7, 2019
With all the tacky, semi-functional Sonic games that Sega has put out over the last couple of decades , it feels like a given that the Sonic cart racers would be second-rate cash-ins. In comparison to other genres, cart racers are less creative spaces and more ready-made wireframes for studios to paper mache over. What distinguishes them is less often the play and tone, and more often the brand...

Modern Warfare 12 years later
Published Dec 7, 2019
There's something about Modern Warfare that helped re-invent the first person shooter genre. Yet, at the same time it's still my favorite Call of Duty game, with it's pacing, systems and sound design. Showing the labor of love of a studio that finally was able to move away from World War 2 games and make the product they always dreamed. Of Raycevick looks at Modern Warfare from its early develo...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game (Zero): Outer Wilds
Published Dec 6, 2019
Game : Mobius Games 's Outer Wilds (PS4) Release Month : May. Quick Look : Here . Started : 06/12. Completed : N/A. I was trying to keep this list of last-minute GOTY potentials somewhat low-key and under-the-radar, if only because I happened upon most of this feature's hit list while they were heavily discounted in the autumn sales (or free, in some cases), but Outer Wilds was the exception th...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game Three: Pikuniku
Published Dec 6, 2019
Game : Sectordub 's Pikuniku Release Month : January. Quick Look : Here . Started : 05/12. Completed : 06/12. Pikuniku is a chill game perfect for those of a young age or who don't play a lot of games; however, even though I'm neither of those things, I found it to be a very personable piece of fluff. The game's designers seemed to draw from Keita Takahashi 's or Tsutomu Kouno 's works, especia...

Go! Go! GOTY! 2019: Game Two: Horace
Published Dec 4, 2019
Game : Paul Helman & Sean Scaplehorn's Horace . Release Month : July. Quick Look : Here . Started : 02/12. Completed : 04/12. My goodness, this game. It's hard to know where to start. What I can tell you is that this game is extremely British and extremely 30-something-year-old British at that. Rare that I feel so seen by a game; the last one steeped in this much '80s British gaming paraphernal...

Gaming Memories: Super Mario Galaxy
Published Dec 4, 2019
Welcome to “Gaming Memories,” a blog series where I reminisce about my favorite video games . I will slowly but surely get to every game on the list, and speak to why each holds a special place in my heart. That not only means I’ll talk about why I think each is a great game that speaks to my tastes, but also where and how it affected me in a larger context. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for rea...

Stranded with my thoughts (SPOILERS!)
Published Dec 4, 2019
So, I really intended to just write about the game part of Death Stranding. That was what compelled me, and that was what I felt I had interesting things to say about. Now, do I have interesting things to say about Death Stranding? Does Death Stranding itself have interesting things to say? I'm still not sure about either! But I kept trying to wrangle my thoughts around what happened in that ga...

Strands and the spaces between.
Published Dec 4, 2019
I step out, and the desert stretches before me. Sand and rocks, undulating, going and going, eventually turning into grassy hills, rivers, more deserts, and far off, way in the distance, snowy mountains looming on the horizon. But I don't focus on that, I just pay attention to what's ahead of me. Take it slow down this hill, walk around these rocks, force myself through this river, one laboriou...
