Red Alert 3 is a fantastic and fresh RTS-
Red Alert 3 is the crazy sibling of the Classic RTS series Command and Conquer and Red Alert 3 lives upto that name, with superb gameplay, silly plot and voice acting and great unit design.
The plot goes something like this- The Soviets are about to lose the cold war so they use a time machine to go back in time and kill Albert Einstein in order to gain Technological superiority over the Allies. This inadvertantly creates a new Threat for the Soviets in the form of the Empire of the rising sun. The empire is an ultra-futuristic version of Japan that looks like an otaku fantasy gone wild.
The gameplay is pretty standard Command and Conquer with the exception that the games three campaigns were all designed with Co-Op in mind. If you dont have a friend, the game gives you an AI which is usually pretty competent.
The game also has a bit of a focus on Naval combat and introduces Amphibious units as part of this.
The game features three unique campaigns that allow you to play as-
- The Soviets
- The Allies
- The Empire(Of the Rising Sun)
Each campaign features silly live action cutscenes that are so terrible that they actually become awesome, and help you get the ins and outs of the games three factions.
The Soviets have a focus on ground forces with powerful units like attack bears, tesla troopers and a good variety of tanks.
The Allies have a bit of a focus on Air forces, with powerful bomber units and helicopters with shrink and freeze rays.
The Empire have powerful naval forces as well as a unique variety of ground forces such as several types of Mecha and a psycic schoolgirl commando.
The visuals of the game are somewhat cartoony and suit the nature of the series, the soundtrack for the game also suits the series and is one of the best soundtracks for a game Ive heard in years.
Red Alert 3 Does little to further the RTS genre but is a shining example of how much fun RTS games can be.
