When a game has several playable characters of different species, real or fictional.
A fighting area that possess multiple locations, which can be gained by one player striking the other at specific locations with a powerful move. One character proceeds to the next arena unwillingly, and taking damage. The other player follows the first player and does not take damage. Fighting then resumes until the match ends, or perhaps until the next transition into yet another area.
Two or more characters are featured on the game's box art.
Characters that are overweight have more body fat than normal for their race, or at least look it. A character that is overweight may or may not have great strength.
Poking fun at a specific existing work, whether a game, a movie, or something else, by imitating and exaggerating its characteristics. Some games use parody here and there, while others are entirely parodic.
Parrying is a specialized block mechanic, often with a tight input window, which prevents the player from taking damage. While some games allow this through a timed directional input towards the opponent, other games tie this to deliberate block inputs as a "Perfect Guard".
A character that appears in many games, often unrelated. For an example, Cid from the Final Fantasy series.
A sequel (also called a follow-up) is a game that carries forward the gameplay concepts, and often the story, of a previous game to which it is officially linked.
A fighting game archetype where characters with a significant similarity in fighting style to Street Fighter's Ryu & Ken.
Slimes are a common "starter enemy" in RPGs, and serve as a mascot for the Dragon Quest series.
A mode in the game, often an unlockable, allowing players to listen to individual music tracks, voice clips and/or sound effects.
A two-dimensional image or animation overlaid into a scene. The foundation of early 2D games, making up everything from props to the player-controlled character.
Like a critical hit, this is a special action invoked from certain attacks in games or caused randomly on attacks by a character's statistic. It causes opponents to lose the ability to attack back for a certain period of time, and usually invokes the hit character to go into a special animation.
A special combo-move in fighting games that is executable after building a meter throughout the match (or round).
Commonly found in fighting games, a super meter increases when either a character takes or gives damage (depending on the game). There are many variations on the super meter, depending on the franchise or game.
A distinctive song associated with the game (often played during the introduction/end credits). Note: This concept deals just with songs with lyrics, as opposed to instrumental pieces.
Primarily found in fighting or sports games, the versus screen typically masks the load time of an upcoming matchup. Sometimes codes may be entered here that will affect the game.
"Vore" is an internet term for a sexual fetish for the act of a creature swallowing someone else whole while they are still alive. The act is also seen in many video games, in a decidedly less sexual manner.
