Overview
Battle Lode Runner is a mutliplayer-focused spin on the classic action/puzzle game Lode Runner that takes several cues from Hudson's Bomberman series. Like many multiplayer TurboGrafx-16 games, it can support up to five players simultaneously. The game's mechanics are identical to Lode Runner: The player can destroy the block diagonally down in the direction the player is facing, creating holes. If another player walks into the hole, they become trapped until the hole eventually reforms, killing whoever is trapped there. Players can also dig up blocks to find power-ups, including a skull that gives them a randomized negative status that they can hot potato to other players by touching them.
Battle Lode Runner was a Japanese PC Engine exclusive (released in 1993) until it was eventually released in the US and Europe for the first time via the Wii's Virtual Console in 2007.
