Lore
Atiesh was formed from the "seed of hate" and wielded by each Guardian of Tirisfal until it was eventually passed on to the last Guardian,
Medivh. After the assassination of Medivh, the staff was found by the Kirin Tor inside Karazhan and was moved to
Dalaran where it was held by many members of the Kirin Tor. Following the quick deaths of all the Kirin Tor members who held the staff, it was locked away "behind impenetrable barriers of magic" and guarded by Angela Dosantos.
During the destruction of Dalaran by
Archimonde, the staff was shattered into fourty-two pieces which were scattered around Azeroth. The base of Atiesh was originally in the hands of
Brann Bronzebeard however it was then passed on to C'thun - it is suspected that Brann hid it inside C'thun to prevent the
Scourge from re-creating the staff although he may have just lost it. The other fourty-one pieces of the staff were captured by the Scourge, the forty shards of the staff were entrusted to Kel'thuzad's lieutenants inside Naxxramas whilst the he himself held the head of the staff.
The Scourge were always aware of the great power that Atiesh held and would have been able to re-construct if they managed to get hold of the base of the staff however the Argent Dawn were able to prevent this from happening.
World of Warcraft
The staff could be created prior to patch 3.0.2, which saw
Naxxramas updated, via a quest which started in Naxxramas. The quest required that the player collected 40 Splinter's of Atiesh from Naxxramas as well as the 'Staff Head of Atiesh' from
Kel'thuzad and the 'Base of Atiesh' from
C'thun and finally cleansing the staff. Only Druids, Mages, Priests and Warlocks could obtain the quest to create Atiesh hence why there are four different versions of the staff.
When
Karazhan was released with the
Burning Crusade expansion, the staff was updated so that players who owned it could create teleports which lead directly to the front door of Karazhan.
