American Civil War: From Sumter to Appomattox is a grand strategy game created by designer Frank Hunter. The game is a traditional turn based game with the United States broken up into hexes. Players will take control of the Union or the Confederacy and lead their nation through war. Armies must be raised and equipped with arms. Divisions, Corps, and Armies are created and historical leaders are appointed at each level. Each leader has stats based on their historical traits although they can be randomized at the start of the game.

The game features both a economic and political layer in addition to managing armies. Strategic cities need to be controlled to generate income to purchase weapons. State governors will need to be satisfied to ensure they supply the armies with troops. There are options to exchange prisoners, emancipate the slaves, and introduce drafts.
