The roller coaster has become notable in video games that allow you to interact with it. Common examples of this include the RollerCoaster Tycoon and Theme Park franchises. The building of a roller coaster in video games can be simple or very advanced. There are often pre-built roller coasters that you can simply place down and be done instantly. However, the more advanced player, may want to opt to build their own roller coaster - from scratch.
Building
Often, when building a roller coaster in a video game, you can choose various elements and options. Elements can be loops, corkscrews, barrel rolls etc. Various options can be tweaked such as the chain lift speed, the launch speed (not available on all roller coasters) and brake speeds. It should be noted that this is not standard in some titles. Some titles may have a less sophisticated model of building a roller coaster, which can limit the player and make it seem unrealistic.
As in titles such as RollerCoaster Tycoon, Theme Park and Thrillville - you can paint the roller coaster in different colors. Some players may want the roller coaster to match the color scheme of their park. Often, you are allowed to pain different parts of the track and the cars too. Once a roller coaster is completed, it is usually tested for safety purposes and can then be opened to the public (or 'peeps' as they are called in RollerCoaster Tycoon). In order to lead people to the roller coaster, a queue path can usually be built and scenery added around the roller coaster, to make it more appealing.
Use a 'stable structure'
There are many video games that have a roller coaster as part of the environmental features. Often, the player cannot interact with the roller coaster. It may be idle, in motion but there may not be any specific coding for it to be interacted with. A good example of a this is in Hitman: Blood Money - an abandoned roller coaster is seen early on in the game, which assists the environment. Titles such as L.A. Rush have a roller coaster included to match their real life counterparts. In Super Mario Sunshine, the roller coaster is located at Pinna Park in Isle Delfino. Mario Party 7 also has a roller coaster that is located in Bowser's Enchanted Inferno!
Types
There are two types of roller coaster that are popular across the world today:
- Steel roller coaster
- Wooden roller coaster
