Xbox Live Made Like A Billion Dollars Last Fiscal Year
" Wow I'll say it, make a Gold membership cheaper It will never happen Just had to say it "It's $3 a month if you buy it in 12 month chunks from retailers like Newegg. If you go any lower than $3 a month you may as well just make it free. XBL is so cheap that it is essentially free.

Free.
" Brad N. needs to stop with the constant GB memes in every article and tagline. He's just running them into the ground and it's annoying. "He will, if you stop with the constant meme of bashing him. On topic, I wish Microsoft would share the love with some free arcade games here or there.
Nifty. Given that the Microsoft entertainment division sees its profits swing from red to black a few times every year, this is a good uptick. Worth noting that profits < revenues, of course. Also worth noting that hiring and layoff trends at MS follow those swings like clockwork.
Selling Kinect for a palatable price will probably result in a sharp downtick. I've got enough gestures of my own for $150. (lulz) But yeah, sounds like Xbox LIVE is now nearing a significant fraction of the sales that MS generates from Office. Xbox is here to stay.
FTFA:
Friar estimates Xbox Live has gross margins, the percentage of sales remaining after deducting production costs, of about 65 percent. [~$650M?] That’s buoyed results in the entertainment division, which has reported an annual profit only since 2008.
It's not like Microsoft actually made that much money on Live. It's just how much money passed through their tightly controlled little econo-sphere.

I actually hate the people who keep bashing the new guys for no reason, it's just that the pointless durgers line ticked me off enough (because similar things had been bugging me lately) that I felt like posting a comment about it. Not bashing anybody.
Great article!
Man, what I would do with a billion dollars...
I know I would donate a million each to all of the Whiskey Media sites.
I've always been happy with the XBox Live service; I'm glad they're raking in the money, personally.

Gotta wonder what sort of cut Microsoft takes for DLC / XBLA games. Whatever it is, it sounds like downloadable content and titles are here to stay. Hot dog! And durgers!
Great, even more reason for publishers to release over priced DLC that should have been part of the 60 bucks game in the first place.
And yet I don't think it's worth the money we pay. Have a growing dislike of Xbox LIVE, we pay a lot for very little.
so, with lal that money, you'd think they could stop charging $50 a year for LIVE service...
I mean, they're obviously doing well on the arcade and movie sales, so they can still bring in money for the service...
plus, they now have a shitload of capital where they wouldn't need as much coming in to keep the service active.
It'd be a nice gesture on the side of Microsoft, and I'm sure many gamers would appreciate it and probobly spend that $50 that they're not spending every year on a new Xbox LIVE Arcade game...
