Mounting cumbersome CPU coolers is much easier outside of the case. Also much easier to do a dry run to see if it even posts before you've mounted everything and ran cables through the case.

I usually put the mobo in first too, but those are all fair points (I can think of a time or two where it would have been so much easier to put the CPU cooler on if it had been outside of the case).

They address that in the video. They are building a PC, hence bright lights to see.

man... I don't understand how it takes them 4 hours to put a couple components into a case. Building PC's are a 20-30 min job at most. No one should ever think this is how you put a PC together. It was an entertaining stream though.

@lebdrift: I've only built a couple of PCs, but I usually do it your way: mount the mobo, then add everything else.

...I've got fat hands with chubby sausage fingers, so mounting the mobo is difficult at the best of times, let alone with other stuff attached to it.

@ripelivejam: Never spread it with your finger in a plastic bag, that's for sure. That creates too much risk of air bubbles, which will hurt cooling performance. Really, you only need a single grain-of-rice-sized ball in the center, but anything up to pea-sized is fine.

There's actually nothing wrong with too much these days, since most thermal paste is non-electrically conductive (for safety). The original concern in the 90s was paste leaking onto the board (or CPU package, back when CPU's didn't have integrated heat spreaders) and shorting something out.

You would want to err on the side of more, not less, for the type of cooler Brad had (the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo) because it is a heatpipe direct contact type cooler. They need more paste because some is going to squeeze into the gaps between the pipes.

@lebdrift: I wouldn't say you are weird neccesarily, but just a few minutes into this video, it looks like they have a 212 or 212 evo, which is something you would want to mount before sticking into the case. I've built more than 20 and less than 50 pcs over the years, and i've always found it easier to build to board then mount afterwards.

I remember watching the Agents of Mayhem quick look and thinking the bad English that the Japanese assassin and his daughter spoke with sounded sorta racist. After listening to the narrator of Everybody's Golf(Yuka?), I guess it was actually pretty accurate.

I was already snickering at my RFID-ed balls, so the first stroke at a hole was just uncalled for.

If anyone wants G-Sync, 144Hz, 1440p for a good price look at the dell S2716DG. It is TN but I have been happy with it and dell is great for returns if required. I didn't need it. You can find it on sale from time to time for $500 or less.

Brad I'm sorry I have to tell you this but the point of the pea shape/line/cross application of thermal paste is to promote consistent spreading of it as you tighten the cooler. By manually spreading it with the bag you have created uneven application of the thermal paste and may have created air pockets which will trap heat.

BTW, the people talking about proper spreading of thermal paste, should watch these as the results were all the same except when they used too little of thermal paste, which resulted in higher temps(bad):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJq-FbhzOtk

In other words, Brad should do Brad in how he wants to spread the thermal paste.

I've got a question for somebody on upgrading video cards:

My MB is about 4 years old w a 3570k, I have a 550w power supply currently running a GTX 970. Are there any limitations to keep upgrading a video card to a 1080 or so?

Building PCs sure has changed since 9 years ago when brad only took 3 minutes. Must be because of the GPU and cooler.

Is there such a thing as too much thermal paste?

Yeah, too thick of a layer = higher temp.

Brad should just put some paste in a line (arcticsilver has online docs on a variety of AMD and Intel processors and in which orientation to apply the line of paste to cover the dies more efficiently) and just put on the heat-sink. The weight and pressure will do the rest.

http://www.arcticsilver.com/methods.html

Do not spread manually on the CPU itself, but you can apply a very, very thin layer on the cooler side to cover up any irregularities. But usually, with better coolers, that last step is rarely needed.

Just started the watching, but I had to chuckle at seeing the 4 hour video length. People always say that PC building should take like an hour, max. The two that I've built became 24 hour nightmares. I guess that that projected time comes from knowing precisely what you're doing. Having to chase down answers on the internet for weird roadblocks along the way, or because you're super paranoid, will slow you down an awful lot.

It's something that I would like to get better at and more familiar with.
