E3 2013: Final Fantasy X and X-2 Get the HD Treatment

Final Fantasy X-2 is the greatest unintentionally comedic RPG ever made.

I passed on 2 as well. If it is priced right might pick it up. Or I guess I could get the original dirt cheap.

I don't remember liking X-2, but I also don't remember anything about it so I'm gonna give it another chance. I'm excited about this.

This trailer... is one of the worst I've ever seen. Ever. It's like they put literally no effort into this at all.

Let's nip it in the bud here. X-2 gets way too much flak, mostly from people who think that anything "girly" is uncool. It has one of the best battle systems in all of RPGs, up there with Grandia. Sure it's all set in a campy tone, but it's a fun ride if you can just let go of your inhibitions and expectations for what constitutes a Final Fantasy story. That may be asking a lot, but at the end of the day, it's a video game; have fun with it.

As for X, it's still one of the greatest games ever made. It has its failings, and I'll admit the outfits in Spira are ridiculous, but it has heart, soul, a fantastic battle system, awesome customization, a fantastic soundtrack, and a memorable story. At least, in my opinion. Flame as you will, but I won't waver because it's cool to hate all things popular or campy. I like what I like. That includes things like Trigun and Halo, all the way to Azumanga Daioh and FFX-2. Variety is good. This compilation looks enticing.

Man. Is there an option for Japanese VO? Some of that was cringe-worthy.

My biggest problem with X-2 is that it actually gets pretty freaking hard. Never did finish it.

The story in X-2 is pure fluff. It's pretty ridiculous and very fan-servicey. That being said, it's a very mechanically solid game. It's probably my favorite implementation of of the job system.

After all these years, I still dislike the voice for Tidus as much as I did when I first played it. Even though it's HIGHLY unlikely, it would be nice if there was dual audio for this. All that aside though, I will still pick this up, really liked the mechanics in both games.

To this day I have never finished FFX despite it being one of the only main FF games I have enjoyed playing. I never beat it because I was about 5-10 hours from the end when I was reading an issue of EGM and they just spoiled the ending in some unrelated article. I was so furious at that fucking magazine I think I stopped reading it and threw it in the garbage.

Did they redo the VO? I don't remember those voices being the FF X voices...

I fucking love both X and X-2.

It would be sweet if I could buy the games once and play them on both my Vita and PS3 and have the saves sync but I suppose that might be too much to ask for.

X is a great game, but that English voice acting is awful.

Too bad that they aren't redefining the only good PS2 FF game.

FFX is my first and favorite FF gameyea it's pretty melodramatic and JRPG to hell but cmon Aaron is awesome. X-2 was a hot piece of garbage

I have fond memories of X, but that trailer is sort of spoiling my nostalgia. So much melodrama.

X-2 was dumb awesome. Played it home alone... thought I would have been judged... I so would have. I lost my copy... I'm in.

@ravelle: Yeah, it was always this bad. To be fair, the lips don't match up all that well in the Japanese version either.

XII? I've always meant to go back to it...but I was like 30 hours in and had hardly made a dent in it. Not to mention I was severely underleveled for no reason so I had to constantly grind to get anywhere.

FFX is one of my favorite rpg's of all time. I can't wait to reply this in HD.

I'd like to believe that X-2 was intended to be a parody of Final Fantasy and its various storytelling tropes, but there is a complete lack of self-awareness that suggests the player is meant to take it seriously.

Yes, this is original voice acting and it's always been terrible. The fact that the mouth movements didn't match the voices bugged me back in 2002, but it's not that they did a bad job there. It's just that the lip synch animations were done for the Japanese voices.

Having a similar trouble with The Witcher 1 right now. The character lip synch is very realistic... in Polish. So I keep going between playing in English while not looking at the mouths, then in Polski with subtitles.

I don't know if this game will hold up at all. It was fun back then but boy was that story moments cringe worthy. However, the battle system and grid system deserve praise.

Who else is hype for finally getting to play international version?!?! No one??... oh... okay...

They're shooting squarely for people who have already played these games. Sure, new people might play this for the first time, but SquareEnix needs to punch the nostalgia buttons and the best way to do that is to remind you of important, pivotal moments that you still remember clearly.

But consider that I've never played this game, and I don't feel that I've been spoiled on the plot, really. Most Final Fantasy trailers have similar strings of vague philosophical non sequiturs. Then again, I'm not sure one really CAN be spoiled on the plot of a Final Fantasy game, since it usually ends with "believe in your self and your friends" or "the power is within you" with just a sprinkling of some supplementary angst.

After being let down by Final Fantasy 8 and 9, I went into 10 not expecting all that much. The game blew me away and I beat it in a crazy marathon session over one weekend on a borrowed PS2. Game had a seriously awesome ending. No clue whether it would still hold up.

On a side note, I stopped about half way through 12 and about three hours into 13. Final Fantasy is a goddamn crap shoot.

Maybe I should get this and actually finally beat FFX this time... I stopped while inside of Sin. I know right! I don't know what's wrong with me...

Slightly better graphics of a game I already own that still doesn't look current with the updates and that's about it for $40, I really don't get who purchases these lazy HDs.
