Turrican
Turrican is a side-scrolling shooter series originally developed by Manfred Trenz (Turrican and Turrican II on C64). The 16-bit conversions and all following games were developed by Factor 5.
Turrican?

I don't even know what Turrican is. I thought this was going to be a blog post about some sort of elaborate energy drink.
It definitely seems like a right place, right time game like you mentioned. It seems too generic for anyone to pick it up who hasn't heard of it yet, like myself.
I was never a big fan of the Turrican series, but I was more of a DOS whore back then and it was a C64/Amiga thing. Both of those were pretty huge in Europe and I'm sure the C64/Amiga bombers will have fond memories of the series.
My first exposure was Super Turrican and I just could not get into the control scheme. Likewise, I haven't really been able to get into Rendering Ranger at all, despite really, really wanting to like it. On the other hand, when Abuse came out for PC, I ate it up like cookies.
It does bum me out that I apparently missed the boat on the game, but I think I was fortunate enough to get to experience plenty of other games that the C64/Amiga userbase didn't get.
I would not say it was huge here, I don't ever recall the being the case, it was fairly popular, but due largely for the like of 2D scrolling shooters at the time. I have played the C64 and Amiga games. They were fun but not great as I remember them. The last I played was super on SNES.
Is a new game on the way?
Turrican, meh......
Super Turrican's the shit!
It was okay actually.
I note it's pre-rendered intro, the grabbing claw, and laser effects.
I remember renting the version for genesis quite some time ago. Played it for an hour or so an moved on. Not much good if you ask me.
I assume this is on NES, since I've heard of Super Turrican.
Turrican is very much of its time and place. Its one of those games we (in UK) were told was huge in America. It had great box art and was probabley the most hyped game of that year. This lead to every one i knew at the time getting it ,pretending they liked it for weeks before coming to the truth the it was rubish.
I really wonder why you asked about this Jeff because according to Gamasutra Factor 5 is actually working on some concepts for a new Turrican game but since we are not talking about that,Turrican is one of those old school games that i didn't get the chance to play ( I was 2 years old back then dude!) and never really heard of, it appears though the game is not recommended, not even one bit...
I keep forgetting that Europe is one undivided, monotonic place instead of a bunch of different nations and ethnic groups with different cultures and languages (and game markets).
Ha-ha.
"Brits are weird like that.....No we call soap, soap. We call the stuff you wash dishes with, washing up liquid.
They actually call soap "washing up liquid""
But anyway, I owned an Amiga back in the day and I had Turrican. It was alright at the time, the music was pretty cool but then again the majority of the stuff on the Amiga sounded great.
I always thought it was just mediocre with awesome music. The control scheme was over my head at the time, as I was so used to anything Contra.
