Tom Bissell is an award-winning journalist who has contributed to many publications, such as The New York Times, Harper's Magazine and Slate, even before he became notable in the video game industry. He was then known for his autobiographical travel writing and embedded journalism.
He carried that style of writing into his 2010 essay collection on video games Extra Lives: Why Video Games Matter, in which he examines a selection of games and their significance in culture and his own personal life. The book is highly praised by critics, and is widely considered to be an important book in video game criticism.
He has since worked on a few games as a script writer, often collaborating with Rob Auten. He has also authored video game essays and reviews for Grantland.
