Season's Beatings: Ascension Preview!

This event is taking place in Cleveland from the 28th to the 30th, featuring all sorts of games and players from EVO as well as new games that have been released after:

Featured games

• King of Fighters XIII
• Tekken Tag Tournament 2
• Mortal Kombat

If you saw EVO this year you'll know that it was the Mexicans and the Koreans who stole the show in a lot of the games on display, and many of them are making the return trip to the USA for Ascension including these two crazy KOF players:

the SSFIV: AE 2012 EVO Champion Infiltration

and one of my favourite players in UMVC3, Mame Spider.

Recent releases, TTT2, P4A and DOA5 will all be at Ascension, I'm looking forward to seeing what the highest level matches of those games look like. If you've seen or taken part in the Giant Bomb P4A Community tournaments you'll know how fun that game is. TTT2 has had a very positive response from the 3D fighting game players and DOA5 was just released so we'll have to see how that goes, if it's half as nuts as the story was in the Giant Bomb Quick Look it should be good to watch at least.

Jeff Gerstmann vs. Max, Max completes Retro Assist Me series

Maximilian is the most prominent member of the Fighting Game Community on Youtube (34 million views) with his fighting game and FPS videos. His Assist Me show is particularity good, check out episode 1 out of 4 of Retro Assist Me. 1/3rd Back to the Future parody, 1/3rd part continuation of the Assist Me story and 1/3rd introduction into the recently released Marvel vs. Capcom Origins.

Both Max and Jeff's first online ranked match in Tekken TAG 2 when it first came out was against each other and was recorded in Max's video of his impressions of TTT2's online.

Mame Spider is coming back? AMAZING.

Can't wait to see Mame Spider back in action. I sincerely hope the turnout for AE gets close to matching Marvel. I love both games but the SF community has been doing other stuff as of late.

Season's beating shaping up to be great this year. There are just so many games. Hopefully each gets good stream time. Will there be multiple stream? I don't want AE and Marvel dominating the steam even though I do like those games.

Yeah you're probably right about all those. ChrisG/Fchamp will probably go down to the wire though.

There's also going to be a USA Vs the World 5on5 Exhibition. The US team is obviously a strong favourite there.

And there's going to be an EG Vs the World SF4 thing. Can't say I find the notion that exciting but I'll say the World for that as they'll have the EVO #1 & #2.

Wow, just watching a Marvel match, Tayson taunts Justin Wong when he's one hit away from victory, Wong responds with Iron Fist's Level 3 super and wins the match instead. WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?

EDIT: Also, there's about 13.5K eyeballs on the ConsoleCombat stream now, so the thing has pretty much slowed down to slideshow mode.

Alright I have a question, how come America always gets to alternate between their players, while players on the other 'World' team have to play all their matches in one go? Is it like home rules or something?

Yeah pretty much. They call it running the gauntlet. Everyone ends up playing everyone so its not like it gives the US team an advantage.

Chris G 15 - 10 Filipino Champ

The EVO champion was far from his best against the man he beat to make the EVO grand final, EVO 2012's 3rd place, Chris G.

Both East Coast and West Coast coaches and hype-men were awesome

SSFIV: AE 2012 Top 16 next, followed by UMVC3 Top 16.

Well my money was on Chris G but I can't be too happy about the result. The ideal outcome would have been for them to both somehow lose.

Yeah I don't think Infiltration got his tactics right at all. He played the match-up like he was fighting Zangief, constantly backing off and cornering himself. K-Brad could just focus purely on offence. He did play really clean though.

DOA4 and 2-time Mortal Kombat EVO champion Perfect Legend used Gen Fu (at the asking of the DOA5 director) against a Jann Lee player, but lost the first match, so he switched to Jann Lee and beat him 3 matches in a row against the other guy's Jann Lee.

PL's main normally is actually Ayane.

Patches are in the works to make the playing field a little more even according to the PL post-match interview, he's had a lot of discussions with the devs who were there.
