Having had a chance to play this game at PAX last weekend, I have to agree. In fact, I found it to be kind of a sleeper hit on the show floor, as everyone was caught up with Left 4 Dead 2 and the other, more prominent hits. But honestly, I'm as excited for Split/Second as I am for anything else I saw at PAX.
Also, I thoroughly enjoyed the studio's previous game, PURE. Expect good things here. This should turn out to be an excellent, if slightly unorthodox, racing game.
I played it at PAX as well, and I kind of saw it as a more serious Mario Kart. that said, my initial impression was that there didn't seem to be a lot of depth, and may not warrant a day one purchase. If I saw some menus and different cars and tracks, that might put me at ease.
I was surprised by the game, I'm looking forward to it (they said PC release as well, woo). I probably won't have to purchase it if they release it on Steam but if I do they did give me a $5 off voucher for Amazon.com
