Quick Look: EX: Just Cause 3

As we approach launch we enlist some help to make sure our stunt positioning is just right.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

In This Episode:

Just Cause 3

Stunt Position

Episode Notes:

You might notice some video dropouts during the game and that seems to be a result of the developer's PC going through our capture gear and losing and reacquiring signal.

I would love it if the console versions run this smoothly.

I know I'm in the minority but I found the "just mess around and blow shit up" nature of Just Cause 2 pretty boring and this looks like virtually the exact same game, only with cheat codes on. I'm glad you all are getting more of what you wanted but I couldn't be less interested.

I'm on your side of the fence too. The whole open world destruction thing just got super repetitive and boring fast. So I just finished the story up for the set piece moments, shrugged and moved on.

I played JC 2 for like 20 hours despite feeling that way overall which was a testament to how fun the movement and destruction was. I am a bit worried about this as well even though it looks better in all those regards. At least the story shown was on 2 levels of the worst shit ever so maybe the missions will be better?

Also one of the weakest parts of JC 2 was the shooting and I'm not sure if this is any better.

To me this looks like it will be good fun for a while don't get me wrong but I just want it to be great.

Nice to see that the tethers have been upgraded and you can use more of them without having to resort to mods like you needed to in JC2. Even to the naysayers who say this just looks like an upgraded version of the last game, I'm excited. An updated JC2 with a new and equally over the top villain? Sign me up!

Granted it deserves be be titled as a true sequel but, much like Call Of Duty detractors, some people just can't accept that folks like the Just Cause games. My heart goes out to them. As for what us JC fans will be doing in December though? I, for one, will be wingsuit flipping under bridges and firing rockets for sure. Sounds like an excellent way to close out the year to me!

It is games like this one that really makes me wish I could afford an xbox one. I have been very sick for a long time and out of work but the giant bomb videos are a constant source of joy and a bright spot in my day. Hopefully in the future I can borrow an xbox or maybe rent one somewhere. I would love to be able to play games again.

Man this looks cool. But I still am not over how much I didn't like the first game. I kinda just want to watch vinny play this for a few hours.

The first game as in Just Cause 1? because man, that game has not aged great, I don't know if it was even great in it's time except that it had the beginnings of something really neat. I picked up 1 and 2 on steam a year or so ago started playing them in order, because I'm a bit compulsive like that, and JC1 was alright, fairly ugly and with more than it's share of openworld jank I haven't played a ton of open world action games so I enjoyed it enough as an okay one of those. By the time I got to the end [or, nearly the end, because that last mission is friggin impossible] I was pretty tired of it, I wasn't sure I even wanted to play Just Cause 2, certainly not right away, but I booted it up to take a look and immediately it was like the scales had fallen from my eyes, Just Cause 2 is an infinitely better game in every way, more polish, better game play, it executes more fully on the premise, it's like night and day.

Basically the story of my terrible time with JC1 was at the time I was using gamefly which was kind of expensive and took forever to get new discs. I got JC1 for PS2 in the mail and popped it in. Game was so broken and just bad. I remember in one of the first parts of the game a boat spawned in the sky and fell onto some stuff. Between that terrible performance and bad graphics I mailed the game back after like an hour. And looking at JC2 and now 3 I want it to have some Mercenaries/Freedom Fighters DNA in them but I don't think they really have the hooks that made those games fun.

I honestly didn't have this on my radar at all. I enjoyed Just Cause 2, but I always felt like the controls were a huge pain. After watching this though.... Fuck it looks real good

The game looks like part 2... Not really an improvement overall in gameplay. I have nightmares testing that game back then.

Isn't it weird how the sequel looks like the game it's a sequel to?

Am I the only who thinks the wingsuit flying looks dumb? So much in this game requires massive suspension of disbelief - the grappling hook, Rico's ability to shrug off bullet wounds, etc. The wingsuit flying leaps across the boundary from implausible but fun to impossible and stupid!

12 inches of armpit fabric just doesn't provide that much lift guys. Am I losing my mind here?

I'm thinking exactly the same. This makes me a little uncomfortable. Gamespot I expect this from... these guys... I'm a little less happy with.

Looks good but I’m not quite sure of the validity of a GB Quick Look under a developer controlled play through.

Well the Giantbomb community is constantly whining about how hard it is for them to play and talk at the same time.

Fix-ed.

Quoted for Truth - The GB guys are great at it - which is why they have this site. Compare to Gamespot, who finally have a bunch of people who can do it well, which has taken them a long time.

Also why my above comment is as such. Obviously there are things that an embargo won't let them get away with, or worse. There are some major problems the devs want to avoid showing on record, that GB guys could easily find.

Sheldon is totally 100% that Joe Don Baker character from the Moore-era Bond films. I will not buy this game until Avalanche admits their unironic love for Roger Moore.

Except that that Joe Don Baker character (Jack Wade) was from the Pierce Brosnan era, not Roger Moore.

Watching this video, and I can physically and mentally feel Vinny wanting to take control of this game and break it in under 30 seconds.

Still failing to see whatever problems people seem to have with QL EXes. It's a perfectly sound concept and the guys (and girl) here were perfectly fine also.

Game looks just great, can't wait to get my hands on it.

I couldn't get over the HYPE man popping in constantly with "Oh, wow! What a SICK slide into that amazing EXPLOSION!" I was waiting for Alex to let him know how much of a tool he was being and to please knock it off. It was distracting to the point of not being able to watch the Quicklook any longer. Anyone else get that vibe?

Huge amount of framerate drops and slowdowns. Hopefully this is just due to a slightly worse PC (in combination with quite a bit turned up settings) or an unoptimized, unfinished version.

Game looks fantastic apart from that.

At 45:26 a rebel is straight up murdered in the background of a cutscene and nobody notices. Secret horror game.
