Wow, unless I'm mistaken this looks way crisper through the video archive than it did over the livestream.

Does anyone want to snag a 3080 and send it to me for a sub-scalper price?

Man, Brad and Vinny streams feel like I'm watching two lifelong friends enjoying games to their fullest. Just watched the Demon's Souls playthrough and they still might be doing the best stuff on GB together years later.

And with Descent Into Cerberon playing on loop, one of the first guitar songs I ever learned? Peak internet content.

I archive a local version of my streams at ~30Mbps bitrate before they get chewed up and sent to Twitch, so that higher quality version is what's getting posted to the site. Spent a ton of time in the March-May timeframe working out a video workflow at home, and that was one of the biggest benefits. Big shoutout to my NAS for all the heavy lifting on encoding and storage.

I hope they mess with the mirror blocks, making a room out of those is wild.

I love how Jeff just randomly pops in Minecraft swinging a sword and just wrecking the place. That was a welcome surprise and got a laugh out of me.

I downloaded the ray tracing beta for Minecraft after getting a 3070 and it’s genuinely incredible. I hadn’t really understood ray tracing until seeing it like that, and it really makes me excited to see the way it’ll be used in future games! Probably what I’m most excited for in this generation! :)

@brad if you want to make your own worlds using RTX in minecraft here's a site with tons of RTX texture packs, just download the pack and double click the "mcpack" file and it auto imports it into the game, then just add the packs to your like any other

https://mcpedl.com/?s=RTX

Also in the first world you were in I believe the normal terracotta blocks are the emissive blocks and one of the nether blocks in the mirror block

And on the rendering distance, you hit a weird bug, I always play with distance set to 20 chunks on my survival worlds and on my 2070 super i get around 75fps

Pathtracing just means that it is fully raytraced. I think the main thing limiting more complex games from going full pathtracing is the creation and updating of the BVH structure which is the data-structure that is built up of the geometry to trace the rays into. With a simple game like Quake II you can just put the entire game world and every dynamic object like enemies and stuff into this structure and update it every frame. On more complex games they usually limit what is being put into this BVH structure as far as how far away objects get included and how many dynamic objects are included and sometimes it gets updated every other frame and so on.

My take on the whether it helps or hurts artistically when it comes to lighting games is... well, movies are "raytraced." so are plays. So I bet the process just gets closer to what a gaffer does in real life.

I'm pretty sure that one of those RTX example maps in Minecraft has light puzzles. I mean it doesn't actually check the light to confirm the solution but the way to find it is via how the colored light changes.

Quake 2 RTX is fun to check out, but I wouldn't want to actually play Quake 2 that way. It kind of murders the vibe of that game.

My understanding of a Camera Obscura was that it was an indie pop band from Scotland in the mid to late 00s. JK. I think Vinny has it right.

I am SOOO happy to see so many group and pair streams after the Covid solo content. No offense to it, but this just feels so much more like GB to me. Duders/ettes on the digital couch playing games together shooting the shit.

Great content, thanks guys.

Are they planning ray tracing for the series x? (While keeping it 60fps hopefully?) Otherwise may wait for a video card upgrade but the prettiness is tempting.

Imagine a 3d dot heroes remaster but raytracing. :O

Raytracing on objects is very boring since we already have baked solutions but raytracing on faces in Miles and NBA2k is amazing.

I wanted to echo some of the stuff you said in the video about devs surprised we are able to do this at all and 20 years ago nobody would have thought possible. I remember in college learning game dev in '04 a teacher told us all about ray tracing and about how ray tracing in real time back then was basically the end goal of where they needed to get to with lighting it was just at the time impossible to render higher than like 1 frame per second hah. It's crazy how close we are to fully realizing it already. Our teacher seemed to imply we were even further than 20 years off from even getting close to it.

It finally clicked for me when you catch Quake guy’s shadow in the tunnel in front of Brad with the flare behind him. And then the self-shadowing stuff on mundane, tiny items like health packs. Crazy!

Listen to this soundtrack and realize that modern orchestral soundtracks are trash. I hope one day great soundtracks come back to games.

This was super fun! You guys must know some talented graphics programmers, people like Cowboy, to have come and join you to explain things with more confidence right? Sounds like something like that could be an interesting show.

I'm a 3D artist, I deal with raytracing in offline GPU rendering all the time, real time raytracing for games is so exciting and it's converging with my professional work as well. Within the next year I will probably be completing most of my shader lookdev in real time versions of the non-real time render engines that I use, using the non-real time render version for final renders. Extremely rad stuff.

I was one of those people who argued for years that real-time path tracing won't happen in our lifetime. It's absolutely bonkers where we're at now.

While I like the fact that GB is finally giving ray tracing the attention it deserves, part of me feels like Brad is just rubbing it in my face that he was able to get a 3080 (I’m fully aware this is irrational).

The things that sour me on raytracing is the part where computational cost follows market cost for graphics cards. Right now a fancy GPU is still too expensive for most people to appreciate and we're already butting up against what a mass audience is able to discern quality-wise with these new consoles.

That and it might knock us down to 30FPS land again which would be a bummer. Hopefully the option for that will become standard and you can always get performance modes back for it.

Although this is all academic if the process of how devs put in the work is not actually better supported from an organizational level.
