I'm optimistic about the Switch, but there's no way in hell I'm gonna pre-order it. Hopefully it will be a good system and hopefully Zelda and Super Mario Odyssey will be amazing. If so, then I might pick it up this holiday season if they come out with a decent bundle.

Anecdotally, I know tons of guys that didn't even want to bother with the Wii U that are jumping in immediately on the Switch. It's definitely a more appealing product. I just hope Nintendo can capitalize on it by making it into the pure hybrid that it needs to be.

I feel like Jeff is being absurdly negative here.

Point by point:

1. 3-6 hours is, absolutely, portable. Most people don't have a daily commute that's more than 3 hours. Okay, yes, you might have an issue with it on your international flight. But it seems like a completely viable portable device.

2. Nintendo is not highlighting the new 3DS-style games much here (although Octopath Traveler and some others are in that vein.) That doesn't mean they're not happening. They want to show games that push the hardware. But I would not be surprised to see the Switch start to see a flood of quality, lower-priced, less battery-intesnive games like the 3DS.

3. I haven't touched the controllers, so I can't say. I doubt the right joy con it's as bad as Jeff makes it out to be, especially to someone who doesn't doesn't make a career of playing games. But even if it's a bit uncomfortable, having two player available out of the box is a huge plus.

4. I'm happy to see motion controls back. I think they were way under-utilized. With the different control options available for the Switch, I don't think we'll see much more of the "wiggle this instead of pushing a button" controls nonsense (I'm looking at you, Donkey Kong Country Returns.) Instead, the only games who will use it much or those that are designed around it, Arms being a prime example. I am hoping that the hardware is an improvement over the Wii Motion Plus. I think we have yet to see the ultimate evolution of motion controls, and I'm holding out that we'll still see some innovative stuff that could not be done well with a regular controller.

5. 1-2 Switch looks pretty bad. It's a gimmick. No argument there.

...and you can rent half a joycon controller halfway charged for two weeks if you return it with at least half of its battery left to ANY nintendo retail store in your area as long as half of their staff has been employed at least half of the duration of the first period of the FUCK OFF!

@wollywoo: His viewpoint makes sense if you take into consideration his long history of not leading a lifestyle that's conducive to portable gaming. He drives to and from work and values the size and woomph of home entertainment. Personally, the portability of this device went out the window when the size of the portable component of the Switch became more apparent. I would personally be terrified to take that thing anywhere public...seems like a golden opportunity for any thief out there who thought his or her biggest score that day would be an iPhone or 5 bucks in cash and a few already cancelled credit cards. Therefore, I really only disagree with your first point. 2-4: we'll just have to wait until more information about upcoming titles and see if Nintendo decides to actually use their crazy control schemes, Switch's 3DS-esque functionality, and motion controls or not.

@sasquatchdoobie: I preordered, but I'm not sure I'm gonna keep it. Given their proclivity to revise hardware, I'm almost positive there will be a Switch XL or even a (New) Nintendo Switch that fixes some of the battery/hardware complaints. Or at the very least a good bundle in a few months.

I don't know. I just hope they make good on games this time. I bought a Wii U anticipating an Animal Crossing for it, probably dumb to assume (Even though there was an AC on every console they have released for the past 16 years...) Maybe I'll wait for that announcement.

Until then I can play Zelda/Mario Kart/Splatoon on my Wii U. Zelda looks great, but the jump from Wii U (720p) to Switch (900p) is not THAT big of a deal. It's not like Zelda is 1080p60 on the Switch or anything.

You use your phone for multiplayer? And it costs money? lol. Nope. No thank you, Nintendo. Good luck with that whole Switch thing.

I love the concept of the Switch, I'm just absolutely baffled by the choices Nintendo are making here. If I was paying £279 for a home console I damn well would want a better hard drive space than 32GB.

Just seems so underwhelming in general.

The Switch just seems like a mess of a platform from an insular and out of touch company that's only been resting on its laurels from success two decades ago. What are you doing, Nintendo? Just become a software developer finally, please. You'll make a killing on Steam, I'll bet.
