That Sonic package is the kind of creepy mailbag I can get behind.

I may be Canadian but I'm no big Rush fan, but there is NO WAY Skynyrd is better than Rush.

As you guys probably figured out, you don't drink Absinthe straight. It should be pretty heavily diluted with water when it is had just as an Absinthe drink. It's pretty easy to find out the "proper" way to have Absinthe. It also really is not hallucinogenic. The chemical in Absinthe that causes hallucinations is so low that you are more likely to die from alcohol poisoning before it causes hallucinations.

man, I remember getting some pretty good games from General Mills cereal boxes back in the day, Roller Coaster Tycoon 1 and 2. also Monopoly Tycoon which I THINK was actually pretty good?

Having this mini-quicklook at the end of a mailbag feels like when you'd get a new cd and then find out that there was an extra secret song at the end.

It seems really weird to me that Dan doesn't like Rush but loves Skynyrd. Growing up the venn diagram of Rush fans and Skynyrd fans was just a circle. Also, anyone that talks about math as why Rush is good is an asshole.

LET'S ALL DRINK ABSINTHE AND SUMMON THE DEVIL WITH A BOOTLEG SONIC CART

As noted there's nothing hallucinogenic about absinthe. Wormwood is a bittering agent and is used in all sorts of bitter drinks, including most vermouths. When absinthe got big in France in the 1800s people were drinking more absinthe than wine. Because most absinthe is at least 120 proof, they were getting super shitfaced and acting all crazy (like Van Gogh cutting off his ear). Beyond this, wine consumption was way down, so the wine producers lobbied the government to make absinthe illegal in 1915, which was also bolstered by the temperance movement in the US, where it was banned in 1912. Over the past 10 years most of these bans have been lifted and we can now enjoy the real deal! Most things labeled absinthe before 2000 were Czech rubbing alcohol with green food coloring and anise flavor.

Another fun thing: absinthe is so high in alcohol because it must be in order to retain its signature light green color. The color comes from the chloropyll in the herbs that are used to flavor it, and at the lower alcohol contents of typical spirits the green turns to yellow. This is also true of green chartreuse, another amazing high alcohol French herbal liqueur that is bottled at 110 proof (55% alcohol) and tastes like magic. Booooooooooze.

Edit: That decanter is not where your absinthe goes, that's where you put ice water, which you very slowly drip into a glass of absinthe. As it drips, the anise oils in the absinthe react with the cold water and get cloudy and white. This is called louching and is a bit ceremonious for my taste. It turns out you can shake it with some water and ice and strain into a cocktail glass for a simple, fast louche. That said, the whole water dripping ceremony is a nice bit of drinking theater so it might be fun to do on a UPF! Decent absinthe should never need sugar (would you drip sugar water into a glass of decent whiskey?) so don't mess with the spoons.

I have an absinthe fountain as well. it takes a few trial and errors to get it just right, but do it right with with really coldwather and you have a great drink.
