Microsoft Flight Simulator has somehow made me more excited for a flight sim than any game not called Halo Infinite, it looks absolutely incredible. Not only is it 1:1 world building but it's all real time weather data as well. If there is a hurricane you can fly through an accurate model of it. If you're going over anywhere in the world where it is raining or has strong winds you get that in the game in real time. It's so freaking amazing sounding/looking so far.

Drew was a pro in that segment. I just realized that shows like that are effectively podcasts for old people. Something inconsequential you can put on in the background.

Jeff is absolutely right about a Mario Hockey PROVIDED they get the lady who voiced Daisy in the Mario Strikers games to play her again. That is the perfect form of Daisy's voice ever.

@anderswarming: Reaching back a couple of years here. There's definitely a lot of of writing, academic and otherwise, about how film creates a "dream state" that can draw you in, and frame rate is a technical part of this that affects it directly. Over time, 24 fps more or less came to be settled on as the sweet spot for where this can happen most effectively.

Higher framerates look closer to reality than lower framerates do. This is why security cameras will often use very high frame rates. Even with Peter Jackson's (unsuccessful) attempts to switch up the frame rate, he was doing it at 48 fps, a multiple of 24. But to my eye, this undercut the film, and made the whole thing look like humans in prosthetics rather than dwarves and hobbits and whatever. It undercut the suspension of disbelief that is necessary in film, not just for accepting narrative/plot elements, but in the way you kind of let your consciousness float, and get swept away by the film experience.

I'm not trying to be overly poetic. When you lose yourself in a film, there are certain elements at work, technical and artistic, actively encouraging that effect, and the lower frame rate of 24 fps is one of those tools.

Video games have a similar goal, but are kind of coming at it from the opposite direction. The danger isn't slipping into representing reality. Everything about video games are a construct, artificial and built from the ground up, and it's a battle for acceptance as reality every step of the way. It makes sense to me that that's probably why higher frame rates only help games, and that acceptance of the game state as real to your mind, when it's a hindrance for films, and other visual media that are depicting actually filmed reality.

I am fairly sure modern digital theaters display movies at 24 Hz. Movies are shot at 24 Hz and shown at 24 Hz for consistency. Moreover, think about what Peter Jackson did with Hobbit...it was shown at 48 fps: which is 24 x 2.

Why are we stuck the 24 Hz? The 'feel' of movies on a huge screen just has become "the look". Moreover, showing movies filmed digitally or on physical film can be shown at the same speed - again consistency.

I still want the east / west teams to put a 1 month block on all wrestling and fast food talk. How many times do we have to re-hash the exact same fast food talks or Dan calling out some wrestler as every answer. To get Dan to play just bet him he can't do it. It's time to grow a bit.

Last I checked Wendy's says Nuggets are a side, and since they have the best fast food nuggets all previous responses are wrong. Another litmus test one could use is you're agreeing with Dan.

Framerate is a suspension of disbelief thing for me. HFR movies look like actors in front of a camera with special effects layered on. That's what they are, but I don't want to think that when watching them.

I'm also a resolution over framerate guy 90 percent of the time with games. Super high framerate stuff looks too smooth and it takes me out of the immersion. It looks like a 3d model in a 3d environment. Again, that's what it is, but it's not what I want my brain to see.

I think Alex gets Breakpoint, at least, for the reasons I enjoy picking it up and playing it, filling exactly the same (except for the situational/mission required attention to gameplay) mindless military/survival shoes with or without random matched players in a giant, great looking sprawl filled with Metal Gear and Killzone bad guys, with all the game-play mechanics of a Metal Gear Solid 5, now with semi-interesting mechanics like carrying wounded buddies, having to time stitching yourself up, and if you want, the RPG elements for you to just grab some guns and just pick a direction and GO.

And I am so glad Jeff saw my tweet about Rodney Mullen playing Jace Skell, the ted-talky-braniac-inventor on Aurora. It's just so fucking cool to see him take on an acting role in such a high profile game. I really wish they had made that a selling point, because if you aren't aware, Rodney Mullen (aside from inventing the ollie and a lot of etc), is a super, duper cool person.
