Doomsday Clock is a direct sequel to Watchmen. And DC did some prequel series to Watchmen a few years ago.

@vinny I had to google this episode to access it because the links on the front page and in the podcasts section are incorrect and lead to the funny 404 page.

Didn’t expect them to do a re-enactment of comments sections in the first few minutes. All they needed was someone saying “why are they talking about [popular thing I don’t like] and not [niche thing I like]?” :p

I want to say this every week, but it slips my mind:

I hate how everyone on the Bombcast is giving Vinny shit for mentioning Division 2. I honestly think he should talk about it more and I am more than happy, and even interested, listening to what he is up to in that game.

I wish Alex ad Jeff stopped being spoiler sports ever single time Vinny opens his mouth.

@faridmon: I dunno, I think Vinny handles it well, and overall I appreciate the comedic banter between the group that usually results.

Doomsday Clock was created as part of an effort to prevent the Watchmen license from reverting to Alan Moore, who rightfully wanted the original goddamn story to stand alone. I haven't read it, but I've heard it has all the quality that a "legally required by copyright" story would infer.

For some direct insight into the '90s comic crash, comic book shop owner Mike Sterling's blog is a gold mine of first-hand insight, despite his opinions on Doomsday Clock.

Anyone else feel a weird vibe in this episode, like everyone was just on the edge of pissing everyone else off?

@alex The Overwatch 2-2-2 Role Lock isn't happening next season, it's happening next stage in the Overwatch League, as in next week.

They said the role lock is hitting the game in full around September, and they're doing a beta in the PTR right now. As for queueing, you're queueing in the role you choose. There's separate waits for tanks, supports, and attackers. Naturally (as did the WoW dungeon finder), it means the supports will probably getting groups super fast, tanks slightly less and dps getting loooooong wait times.

1) Dan's Robert DeNiro story reminds of the time my family went to Bangor to see Stephen King's house, and our dog ended up getting in a bark fight with Stephen King's corgi, requiring Tabitha King to come out and take him (the corgi, not Stephen) inside.

2) I deeply need to hear regular updates on Dan's impressions of Dracula. I loved this segment unironically. I hope that spoilsports who want to get an e-mail read don't brigade Corrections with directives to Dan on The One True Way to Enjoy Dracula, but I'm sure that hope will be in vain.

It’s not worth sending a correction about because nobody was wrong about it but the crew talk a little about Dracula being the start of Vampire fiction (they clearly mean of popularising it’s which is true) while it definitely popularised it, Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu predated Dracula by a couple of decades (and Dracula is somewhat inspired by it.)

dan's idea of asking vinny about the division 2 in unison every week made me throw my head back and laugh, i am serious when i say this show is so incredibly fantastic for the last day of my labor work week when i have no energy to boot up a game yet, sometimes this is even better.

I super agree :( I wanna hear them talk about games they enjoy, getting shit on (jokingly or not) bums me out super hard. I still want to know what Vinny thought of the endgame in Division 1, and if he ever tried out the (surprisingly awesome) Survival modes and all.

It's more that everyone does their 'this is what I did this week, games or otherwise', and Jeff decides 'being a fuckhead because somebody plays a game for more than the length of the zeitgeist' is a fantastic bit to be explored every week in reaction. It's made more obnoxious because he often has NOTHING TO SHARE when the 'whacha playing' segment comes around. He did the same thing a year or so ago when Vinny talked about the 999 games for about 3 or 4 weeks and then when Vinny asks him what he's playing it's often "eh nothin'". Jeff has just been on this dipshit routine for a couple years now and it's been making it harder to listen to the podcast every week.

I'm not sure I follow Vinny's comic book sleeve guilt. It's a bit of a bummer that the kid won't be able to throw his things around without a care in the world now, but that pays off in dividends down the line. The amount of people I have lent shit to in my adult life, only to get back in a condition similar to being tied to the back of a car and dragged for the duration of a cross-country road-trip, is pretty astounding. Taking care of personal belongings is a super important skill and it pays off for everyone involved, not just the person who is learning how to do it.

@indigozeal: DC owns the Watchmen property outright and it was never going to revert to Moore. Not sure where you got that idea but that's decidedly false.

I remember hearing the "Howie scream" as the death scream in Dark Forces and in a handful of mainstream movies before Broken Arrow, so I don't think I'd consider it to be the popularizer of the scream (at least not in the way that the modern popularization of the Wilhelm scream can be attributed to Star Wars, anyways.)

'Fraid not. I hate giving The Mary Sue clicks, but this article explains it: it's an odd clause in the contract stemming from DC not predicting the signficance of the work. The rights were to revert to Moore once DC stopped publishing new editions of the work. Obviously, this wasn't going to happen once Watchmen took off, but DC attempted to use the prospect of spin-offs and other authors writing the characters, which Moore clearly did not want, to try to keep him in line, unsuccessfully. Doomsday Clock was part of the fallout of that; there was the perception that its story, which intertwined the Watchmen characters with the larger DC universe, was a backdoor attempt to shore up DC's copyright on the property in a way that spited Moore. There are other aspects of copyright law that figure into the situation; this article and this article get into the thornier aspects of the contract weirdness.

You can find more if you do a little digging yourself, though. This is by no means an obscure story.

At this point, I'm so burnt out on 80's nostalgia that Stranger Things feels no better than Ready Player One or Family Guy with its constant "remember this thing you liked back in the day? Our characters are doing/saying the thing!"

The title sequence though is deceptively simple but does such a great job setting a mood.
