Man, Rogue Legacy is still by far my favourite of the "Roguelite + Platformer" subgenre. Except maybe Flinthook. Flinthook is fucking rad.

@captain_insano: You may as well. Give it an hour or two. It won't take long for you to figure out if it's a game that you would like to continue to the end.

Brad's alive! Feels like forever since he appeared in content, especially premium series (except for UPF maybe). I just hope that they now will do more Breaking Brad on a regular basis. This series has been and always will be great.

Rogue Legay is a pretty good pick too, even though it's really not that difficult once you really get into it.

I played the hell out of Rogue Legacy, but after beating the end boss I just didn't have it in my to attempt the 4 Uber Bosses and fell off on the game. This might inspire me to reinstall it for a bit.

Never liked this feel of combat, so reduced, free of animations, like in browsergames.

It's funny them deciding to come back to this the week Chasm came out. This game has, in my opinion, not held up very well at all. It was a lot more interesting when the genre was less crowded, and going back to it was not a pleasant experience for me, at least

Rogue Legacy really is a ton of fun, I go back to it often. It's a great mix of rogue-lite and action-platformer.

Rogue Legacy was one of the best uses of crossplay when it came out, jumping between the PS4 and Vita felt magical.

I think Rogue Legacy has aged terribly.

I played a shit load of Rogue Legacy and I think I got all of the achievements except the super ridiculously hard boss rematches. I liked the game a whole lot at the time. I know Dan frequently brings this game up as the roguelite that he wishes more games were like, but as time has passed I really don't think Rogue Legacy holds up. The satisfaction of spending some gold to better yourself even on failed runs is nice, but I don't think it outweighs the lack of satisfaction from the entire rest of the game.

To draw a comparison, Moonlighter reminds me a lot of Rogue Legacy, and they share faults that I think I was quicker to look past in Rogue Legacy. They're both just kinda shallow if you take a step back and really look at the gameplay. Both games have pretty bland combat, and they're about just farming money until your character gets so strong that your success is nearly inevitable. Rogue Legacy got away with it because its style of grindy roguelike was more novel at the time of release, but in 2018 I'm having a harder time liking how meh the combat/dungeon crawling is in Moonlighter. I think Rogue Legacy got sooo much attention at release because there were fewer action-platformer roguelites at the time.

I really liked Rogue Legacy at the time, but revisiting it for this stream, I'm not sure I'd actually recommend it to people in 2018 at all. The art is generic and forgettable, the different classes are kinda just minor stat tweaks, the fairy chest rooms are bad design that you just ignore half the time because you don't have the right rune/magic spell equipped, there isn't really a satisfaction to any of the bosses so much as farming enough stats until they feel fair. I feel the same way about something like Risk of Rain, which at the time also had a certain novelty but just lacked the polish in numerous facets.

They're not all action platformers, but I'd much sooner recommend roguelites like:

  • Slay the Spire: Great deckbuilding gameplay, lots of cool items and rare cards that make for interesting synergies
  • Dead Cells: probably the closest genre-wise to Rogue Legacy, but I think generally a more polished action platformer experience
  • Galak-Z: weird top-down space action game thing, but the 80s anime aesthetic is pretty great, and its combat is genuinely really engaging with good AI and a good feeling of upgrading your ship
  • Crypt of the Necrodancer: rhythm game dungeon crawler that works because its so polished and the music is bangin'.
  • Enter the Gungeon: after several big free updates, it is especially good now. Huge weapon variety, with just enough weird Spelunky-like secret, harder levels and bosses to stay interesting.

If I really had to recommend a sorta unpolished action roguelike to someone, instead of Rogue Legacy I'd recommend Hand of Fate because that Dealer voice actor is so fucking good at being a menacing dick. It's not a perfect game and a lot of the game is just shallow Batman: Arkham Asylum combat, but the card-based storytelling/random events, and that fucking Dealer, actually made for a really memorable experience.

I know Im in the minority here, but I never liked this game.

I love metroidvanias, platformers, and I'm fine with "roguelites". There's just... something about this game that I never found enjoyable.

@sixtycakes: I was kind of surprised they returned to this instead of Hollow Knight as it’s gotten a little more buzz lately surrounding the PS4 release.

Gonna chime in here with some rumblings from the crowd that I never really thought much of Rogue Legacy and it seems to not have aged very gracefully over time.

I dont know if its the camera or the walk animation but this game always gave me motion sickness the same way fallout 3 did with its weird gliding over the ground movement.

Also its a real bummer once you realize you will eventually beat the game no matter your skill level if you are just willing to grind.

Figures, Ben.

The American society can hardly ever take criticism of their way of life lightly. I'm not surprised P5 is a black swan.

(I know the game takes place in Japan and denounces real world parallels, but the criticisms are valid in any modern society, IMO).

And the late game in Ni No Kuni 2 was good?! C'mon!

I don't get why people are so hesitant about SNK Heroines. Besides Miss X not being confirmed yet I guess.
