I know you guys are really in to this whole Dragon Ball thing, but have you considered instead watching the 1989 anime, Doogie Howser, M.D.? It is really one of the most influential animes of all time, and its tropes can be seen in anime and video games to this day.

I don't know how you guys can watch Dragonball Z without first learning about the zoetrope. In many ways anime could not exist with the invention of the zoetrope. It consists of a cylinder with slits cut in the side into which a loop of paper with a sequence of images, or frames, are inserted into. The cylinder is then spun quickly and the viewer looks through the slits to see what appears to be the illusion of movement - a very early example of looping animation.

I don't know how you could possibly enjoy dragon ball z without first watching the classic Tv series Journey to the West (1986). It just makes no sense without context!!

I know you've said No Advice on basically every episode but what if instead you did exclusively what I want.

I think that really works out the best for everyone.

I'm a bit confused about their continued misunderstanding of the mechanics of the Dragon Balls, because in rewatching these Kai episodes I kept thinking "man, they're really repeating how the Dragon Balls work over and over aren't they?"

I did watch the English-subtitled Japanese episodes, though. Was the translation poorly done?

Now we're getting into the part of the show that I remember lasting from when I was like 8 to 14 years old.

@ildon: I can kinda see how someone might be confused about it if they were completely new to anything Dragon Ball related. They should be experts on how it all works by the time they get through the Namek/Frieza saga.

Question for folks who are familiar with both regular DBZ and Kai: Is this batch one of the points in Kai where they just compress an entire filler saga into a handful of episodes?

@bbalpert: yes. Theres like 10 episodes of filler of the trek to Namek that is compressed into 1 for Kai.

Vegeta being Dan's favorite character is the least surprising thing.

I love Dragon Ball Mondays. Also, don't know if Jeff knew this when he joked about them being anime fans over at Creed, but Michael B Jordan is a big ol' anime nerd.

Rewatching DBZ (via Kai) when this show began lead to me now going through Super for the first time. It's really fun! In the far-flung future if this podcast finishes up I think Dan and Jeff would like it too. Its pacing is very similar to Kai but still takes time for weird humorous asides. Anyway this podcast continues to be the best.

According to Dan & Jeff Yajirobi eats ass and flicks beans. What an unselfish lover!

I started watching original Dragon Ball because of this podcast and it's pretty crazy they should totally watch that series next.

I'm not even one that goofs on pronunciations, but for whatever reason when Dan says Freetza it just cracks me up.

I hope they continue this all the way through Dragonball Super.

Man, I doubt Chi-Chi is many people's fave but it's tough to hear her get roasted so harshly by Jeff. Esp. since her best days as a character (such as they were) are behind her before DBZ starts.

Also I thought it was funny that Jeff is noticing the classic Toriyama signature of cool hats.
