Deaths reminiscent of Final Destination

Terroristic acts by our villian

Cerebro esque telepathy

And big ass HAIR.

This run had it all. The 5th episode always ends somewhere good.

Fat Buu is Kirby.

Kinda cute, pink, eats everything, funny, one of if not the strongest fighters in the universe.

Edit: Havent listened yet, but is this the start of the Buu and Satan shenanigans?

The first 7 minutes of this podcast are exactly why it’s the best

Aspects of scenes you never really thought of as a kid watching this show and then having them point and it being the funniest thing with how they look at it

Oh boy, they're already sick of waiting for the fusion to actually happen and we haven't even gotten to the fusion dance practice yet. Yep, this is the Buu Saga I remember, alright.

I’m preempting negative reaction to the SSJ3 design but I feel it needs a little defending. The Buu saga was an attempt to go back to the ideas of old Dragon Ball with magical-style villain, tournament, return of the gag manga “perv” humour etc.

SSJ3 was an attempt to recall the "wild man" aspect of the Saiyans with the wild long hair referencing Raditz’s design and the strong eyebrow-less forehead giving a more primitive early man simian appearance. It was quite intentionally depicted in the anime, showing the great ape evolution like Goku is tapping into his primordial essence.

As someone who as a kid stop watching DBZ shortly after the Cell Saga I've actually been enjoying the Buu Saga quite a bit.

That is until I watched ahead and got to the point where Gotenks appears and later Buu transforms and becomes far less interesting. For me things just got incredibly tedious from then on. Describing Gotenks as annoying is a huge understatement and Gohan's thing in the 'Land of the Kais' just drags on and on. Then there's this repeating cycle of characters not finishing off Buu when they have the chance. The show just becomes a chore to watch.

I powered through (for the first time I felt compelled to skim through episodes at points) but didn't actually start to enjoy it again until the few epilogue episodes at the very end. Though there are some moments and sequences sprinkled in that I'm looking forward to hearing the guys react to. So I'll still continue to listen, but this arc was an overall bummer after a pretty promising start and now I know why people wanted them to stop after the Cell Saga,

But it's going to be the Kai cut isn't it? In the Frieza Saga Goku powers up that spirit bomb for like 5 episodes.

Yeah, this is a good summation of my issues with the Buu Saga. I'm not fundamentally against the idea of Buu as an antagonist, but they mishandle Buu as the arc goes on and the fusion stuff in general just takes forever and almost nothing comes of it. Part of the problem is that even the Kai version of the Buu arc doesn't cut out as much as you'd want; the previous arcs are edited down a LOT, but the Buu saga in Kai isn't actually that many episodes shorter than the original version.

For me Super Saiyan 3 is the start of the show going downhill. Excluding the Mr. Satan and Buu stuff and the final battle on Kai World, the best parts of Dragonball are far behind.

Buu saga is a definitely a slower venture, they take their time getting to pivotal moments like the fusion and whatnot, but there are many good moments to come that I can't wait to hear them talk about.

Personally I like this whole saga, there are definitely legitimate complaints to go along with the differing opinions on various new and old characters, but I just like all the different and fun stuff it introduces throughout.

Also prepare to have a variation on that Roshi conversation a hundred times over if you go back and check out OG Dragon Ball.

I’m gonna be a debbie downer and say I genuinely hate the Roshi perv stuff. Yeah the show makes it clear that it’s not cool, and he gets what he deserves, but it still is played for laughs too much for my taste. Like “Oh yeah he’s a lecherous old man and shouldn’t do that but *shrug* *smile* whaddya gonna do? That’s Master Roshi for ya.”

I had kinda hoped Z moved on from that since there was a lot more in og Dragon Ball, but, oh well. Not writing off the whole show cause of it, just a bummer.

There´s a bunch of scenes referenced in this episode that I, as someone who have mainly only read the manga, have never heard of. Which confirms my fear that the pace of this arc is going to suffer more than the others from The Final Chapters supposed more lenient editing.

Oh well, at least that cake factory scene sounds pretty good.

As for what´s next whenever ASG wraps up, I´m not sure how far into Super the English dub has even gotten, or how available it is. Should they decide to just move on to GT instead I´d be down. I´ve never seen it and only know the main beats though.

@humanity: Pretty much everything that gets cut from the Buu Saga in Kai has already been cut. They basically just cut/edited a dozen Great Saiyaman episodes and called it a day. They trim down some scenes here and there moving forward, but... not many and not by much. Not nearly enough to alleviate the fact that, Buu and Satan friendship shenanigans aside, damn near fuck all happens for the next dozen or so episodes.

There's some great bits and moments coming up, and I think the final stretch of episodes is extremely strong, but everything about Fusion and Gohan's training just draaaaags ooooon for very little pay off. Hey, let's spend over a dozen episodes hyping up Gotenks and Mystic Gohan because Vegeta and Goku are both dead, so it's up to the next generation to solve the problems! Oh wait, both Gotenks and Gohan fail so horribly that they do more harm than good, so Goku and Vegeta have to save the day anyways. But as much of a drag as this all is, the ultimate final payoff that Mr. Satan actually ends up being Earth's champion and without him, they wouldn't have been able to stop Buu is absolutely worth the build-up and I can't wait for them to get there. Only... 3 months? Damn hiatuses.

They should do original Dragon Ball before moving to either Super or GT. Both series have a ton of references, callbacks, and returning characters from the first DB show and if they're already confused with some stuff in Z that was explained on DB, it would be even worse if they move forward without that context.

Also, I think original Dragon Ball seems to be exactly what they're looking for in the types of action, comedy, and character moments. It would definitely be a good and entertaining run of ASG episodes.

@jacksukeru: The available blu-rays of the Super dub cover up to episode 65 so only about halfway finished. They release them every 3 months and they contain 13 episodes so another 15 months before it would be finished.

I know a lot of people hate it for whatever reason, but I believe Dragon Ball Super is the best thing that happened to DB since the Cell Saga. At least, starting with the Universe 6 arc, the previous stuff is admittedly kinda bad. But, Universe 6, Goku Black, and Tournament of Power are all exactly what I want from Dragon Ball.

@johnymyko: I think they'd definitely really enjoy Dragonball, and I agree that there's a bunch of stuff in Super that they'd miss without being familiar with Dragonball (but then, that's already the case for Z, so at a certain point that hardly matters anyways. If they could get through DBZ without DB then they can get through DBS without it). There's some issues with going back that I'm not sure there's any real fix for though. First off, unless they decide to surprise release some bluray sets, it's pretty damn hard to get. As far as I know, the only actual way to legally get hard copies of it is through the 2010 DVD box set which isn't exactly the easiest thing to get ahold of which, even if they get them no problem (I'm sure some fans would be more than happy to send it to them), it still makes it difficult for fans to follow along.

The other problem is that it never got a "Kai" edit. This results in two problems. 1. While not DBZ levels, DB certainly has its fair share of filler arcs. Hell, the entire final arc of original DB is filler. I think the DB filler is actually pretty good in comparison to most of DBZ's which mostly amounted to a lot of padding to buy time, so this isn't necessarily a big problem, but it does bloat the episode count up to 153 (which is comparable to DBZK). Unfortunately, issue 2 will be harder for them. No Dragonball Kai means no redubbing. They already said that they didn't like the dubbing quality in the trunks OVA, so 150+ episodes of early 2000s anime dubbing may be a major turn-off for them.

I definitely want them to go back and check out original Dragonball, but the accessibility issues and lack of a modern cut/redub makes it a harder sell than, say, Super which Amazon is constantly trying to shill the latest episodes of if you've ever even done a single DB related search.

@vicious17: I just started Super and am loving it so far. I know there's some bad animation down the road and people have said mediocre things about some of the arcs, but already Beerus and Whis are two of my favorite characters to ever come out of the franchise.

Totally! Have fun with it, it's a great show imo. Honestly, the only bad thing about the first few arcs is some of the animation is very low budget, and the fact that there are movies that recap pretty much everything that happens in less time. But, it's worth it just for the Vegeta dance.

A lot of what they were talking about, especially early on, had me going "Wait, what?! When did that happen?!" until I vaguely remembered it.

Like, all the stuff with the Dragon Ball hunting and the licking dragons, perv Roshi, the amusement park, the cake factory and the Dirty Harry cop, all of that stuff wasn't even in the original comic and would have been cut out of Kai if they had been following the same standards as the pre-Final Chapters episodes. It sounds like they basically kept entire filler episodes worth of stuff here.

The only filler part they brought up that I distinctly remembered was Mr. Popo finding and being attacked by Goten and Trunks, and that was only memorable because people would cite that as making it extremely confusing as to how strong these characters are.

(also yes, they did mention the limit on the time chamber before, but they sort of waive it in Super, and Videl did mention her mom as having passed away)

According to wikipedia the last episode was 87. So the english dub of Super has 44 episodes left.

I'd personally like to see them do OG Dragon Ball first, but there are only like 64 episodes of GT compared to DB's 153 so I guess that one would be short if they didn't want to commit to something the length of DBZ. Short but bad.

Noooooo, I hate how often this podcast goes on breaks!

As for what comes after Kai, I'd be way more interested in hearing what they think of GT than Super. I like the nostalgia thing about listening to these two guys talk about my beloved childhood show and I think that would be lost on Super, besides everything I have heard about that show seems not that interesting. Plus there is a lot of weird as hell shit in GT that would be worth joking about.
