Cripes, the cross-talking - it's just insufferable when watching UPF. Everyone's just constantly talking over each other, simply by going louder and LOUDER.

GBEast shows simply don't do this, or it just isn't remotely as noticeable.

I usually don't notice any cross-talking anymore. Not since the GOTY Deliberations 2017. Nothing comes close to cross-talking in Giant Bombs history compared to that.

@sykdom The downloads take a bit longer, because they have to run the original video through processing to convert it to the different download sizes.

I’m not sure Ray Tracing is real. Maybe it’s just a big hoax. They should call it the Ray Trace Challenge and you have to stare at virtual water until you go crazy.

Quake honestly still looks just fine, such a great game.

I like that retro gaming box. Old games are the best. I'd love to see you duders load up credits on some classic co-op beat em up arcade games and just blast all the way through them. They're typically rather brief experiences from beginning to end, but there's dozens of them.

DLSS isn't a performance hit. It's a performance gain. It lets the game render at a lower res and upscales it back to normal with the AI interpolation. It looks worse than running at native res and it's particularly bad in Metro. Its also why you didn't see much of a performance hit running RTX.

Metro just uses ray traced global illumination. None of the other lighting is ray traced. Global illumination only comes into effect in the outdoor areas where the sun is a factor so all of what you played in the underground area wasn't using ray tracing. This is why all the examples that Digital Foundry shows in their video are in outdoor areas or indoor areas with light coming from outdoors. They mention this during their explanation in their video too.

I'm glad you showed part of the digital foundry video though. They do a really good job of breaking down exactly what the RTX effects do in Metro.

After that I don't get the hype for Ray Tracing. It's just not impressive and seemed so minor.

Brad explaining ray tracing about 10 minutes in reminds me of this PC Gamer article from the late 90s about upcoming tech trends that were supposedly going to change gaming. One of the things it talked about was flight modeling in flight sims - supposedly the old way of doing it was to model all the different ways a plane would behave at different speeds, altitudes, and positions. But in THE FUTURE the goal was to just build a physics model, then tag all the parts of the plane (flaps, wings etc) with values for weight, drag, thrust and lift, and then let the plane just fly.

I don't know how much of that actually came to pass; certainly physics models are pretty prevalent now. But ray tracing feels like the same thing; after a certain point it just becomes simpler to model how light behaves and interacts with objects, rather than trying to duplicate how it looks.

Why is Rorie so confrontational nowadays?

@gooddoggy: Pretty sure that's exactly how Kerbal Space Program works (and I'm sure many other crafty/buildy games). Each part has values for things like weight, drag, lift, etc. which interact with the physics and aero models to blow up your rockets in fun realistic ways. It's pretty damn cool when you think about it.

Damn I always miss the Amiga requests episodes. One of these days I will make Jeff play Slam Tilt, best pinball game ever created.

I love ya Rorie but you keep steering the conversation to everything except for whats on screen. Plus the giveaways and quasi advertisements breaks the flow. I think with some good timing it could work but in the middle of someones section? Its just a bit much.

Yeah... Rorie, it IS okay not to talk, and absolutely fine to let someone else drive the conversation. You seem compelled to fill voids when they don't need to fill voids. Then you try to compensate because I think you realise it's awkward and you keep continuing to try and take the wheel and drive the conversation. It's okay to detach. As someone who is awkward in basically the exact same way, it's really uncomfortable to watch it happen from a third person perspective every week.

Can someone explain why when Jeff switched to the TV snow background in that emulator that it did something to the resolution of the whole stream, including the archive? That seems nuts.

@dr_mel: A video stream has a limited bitrate (generally, bitrate = video quality). I think Giant Bomb livestreams at a maximum bitrate of around 8 Megabits per sec based on the highest quality file you can download. The TV snow needed a lot of that bitrate because it's a ton of moving pixels (especially at 1080p 60fps), which reduces the overall video quality by pixelating the entire image.

It's a mixed bag. I generally like the manic way Rorie talks, and sometimes it's a lot of fun and sometimes - like I think last week - Brad was playing a game and trying to show something off and Rorie was just absolutely oblivious to this and steering the conversation in every other random direction almost talking over Brad.

You win some you lose some, but overall Rorie is a cool guy.

As a former ST owner, a bullet was dodged in not getting Altered Beast to run. It's even worse than the Amiga port.
