Lore
As the Alliance and
Horde forces as part of the Ashen Verdict were built up to face the
Lich King inside
Icecrown Citadel, many of them realised that they were no match for the power of
Frostmourne. However, Darion Mograine was aware of the power another weapon born of sacred and corrupt powers, Shadowmourne, that had yet to be crafted but would be key to matching the power of Frostmourne and defeating the
Scourge forces.
The axe was to be treated by only master metal-shapers and crafted with many piles of Saronite, it needed to be drenched in the souls of the Lich King's most powerful servants to fuel it's power to kill and it was to be host to thousands of dead souls. To break through the Lich King's armor the axe was to be graced with fifty fragments of the Frozen Throne. With all these makings it would allow the Ashen Verdict to stand any chance of defeating the Lich King and his forces.
World of Warcraft
Shadowmourne was the second legendary weapon to be released as part of the
Wrath of the Lich King expansion in patch 3.3.0 targeted at
Damage Per Second classes. It is available to Warriors, Paladins and Death Knights obtainable through a long quest line starting inside the
Icecrown Citadel raid instance. The quest line involves the player defeating several bosses including the Lich King himself on 25 man mode as well as collecting Shadowfrost Shards and slaying 1000 of the Lich King's minions within Icecrown Citadel.
