    Roguelike

    Concept »

Roguelike is a sub-genre of role-playing games characterized by the exploration of randomly-generated dungeons and permanent death. These characteristics were featured in the classic computer game Rogue, hence the term "Roguelike".

What are the great Roguelikes that are worth playing?

I've been playing around with The Binding of Issac lately and I was wondering, what other fantastic roguelikes are worth checking out?

I know I should investigate Spelunky, at least. Any other suggestions?

Check this out, another gb thread. Also prepare for people to come in and start yelling about Issac and Spelunky not being "Rogue-likes".

NetHack or possibly slash 'em the more robust version. (I just had to put that here. I think nethack is one of the greatest games ever made, but that's just me.)

Dungeons of Dredmor should be at the top of your list.

i agree, i was never into roguelikes but for the price i got the game for i gave it a shot and never looked back, at first i just jaunted through not caring at all how far i got and i was having fun but after a while i started to really carefully plan my moves and after i got my first monster zoo down i never looked back

Calling roguelike-likes rogue-likes has never really bothered me, but you must admit there is a difference. Someone who enjoys something like The Binding of Issac might not enjoy games that have traditionally been identified as rogue-likes. The Binding of Isaac and Spelunky are so disparate from actual roguelikes that it might be a problem to recommend something like ADOM to someone who only has a passing interest in recent indie games with perma death. I would say if you are simply looking for games with perma death and a healthy dose of randomness then check out Dungeons of Dredmor, FTL, and DayZ, plus Torchlight, Diablo, and Legend of Grimrock on higher difficulties.

If you'd like to get a taste of what have been traditionally considered rogue-likes then Dwarf Fortress, Rogue, Dungeon Crawl, Tales of Maj'Eyal, ADOM, and Nethack might be more up your alley.

Infra Arcana is a fantastic roguelike-ass roguelike. It's not overly complex, it has a great atmosphere and a good tileset that feels like you're not using a tileset... it's hard to explain. It's really great.

NetHack, ToME, and Angband are classics for a reason. NetHack has so much replay value (and is super fucking bizarre), while Angband and ToME are just the most effective 'standard' roguelikes to me.

Get up on that shit. But, that's if you are looking for some roguelike-ass roguelikes.

No those are more Rogue-Lites, casual roguelikes. They don't have permadeath or randomized elements so they're not true roguelike-likes. Also they are not set in a tolkien-esque fantasy world, but are shooters, so they are really far removed from the vanilla roguelikes that are all like that. Generally when looking for the most authentic roguelikes the rule of thumb is to ask "does it have dwarves?".

For the OP I would recommend Tetris for a solid Rogue-Puzzler-likelike. It has simple graphics, perma-death as well as random elements, every game is different! The Zelda series also has like-likes, though it has yet to be confirmed whether any of them have ever gone rogue.

some japanese roguelikes i enjoyed were the Shiren game on the super famicom and ZHP by nippon icchi which is a bit like a single player roguelike disgaea.

there is a great free real short burst type roguelike called Desktop Dungeons which is a great way to waste 10-15 minutes at a time.

its probably still worth playing Rogue or Hack. dwarf fortress has a roguelike mode as well.

A *very* simplistic rogue-like with Doom tilesets. It's all about dodging!

After reading up on this genre I knew little to none about, is Oregon Trail considered rogue-like?

I always thought NetHack was the ultimate expression of the classic Hack/Rogue game.

@thunderslash: We don't mention Army Men games, EVER.

Don't cross that line again. Otherwise mods will have to be involved.
