Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Review

4
  • 3DS

For the first time in the franchise's 15-year history, you can pummel your friends on the go. It comes with some drawbacks, but not enough to get in the way of another chaotic, fun experience.

Smash Bros. has served as a love letter to Nintendo’s fans for 15 years, but the publisher has demonstrated a surprising amount of restraint when it comes to releases in the franchise. This new 3DS entry is only the fourth installment on as many consoles, and its roster and features put it on par with its predecessors in several ways. Shrinking the experience down to a portable console comes with its drawbacks, but Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS should do a great job of giving fans something to do until its big brother releases on the Wii U.

Just a couple of cool dudes.
Just a couple of cool dudes.

Much of the hype around any new Smash Bros. is focused on roster reveals, and the new assortment of playable characters is the best yet. Several new characters are welcome additions, and they stand alongside the original crew of twelve and most of the fighters from Melee and Brawl. Little Mac and the Wii Fit Trainer are among my favorites, each armed with an array of speedy melee attacks (Mac’s B-Down counter is an incredibly satisfying method of eliminating opponents). While several leaks ruined many of the unlockable surprises, the secret characters are great choices and feature tons of clever special moves.

Stages are characters in their own right in this series, and the new ones manage to hit the high bar of quality Smash Bros. is known for. Some involve a bit of interactivity, such as the Golden Plains level that offers stat boosts after collecting 100 coins. Pac-Man’s stage even incorporates elements of the original arcade game, making enemies more vulnerable if you collect a power pellet.

One area of downsizing is in the single-player offerings. Whereas Brawl featured the large Subspace Emissary campaign, the new 3DS title offers nothing as ambitious. A new Smash Run mode (which can be played in single- or multiplayer) consists of a five-minute maze that features numerous enemies to conquer en route to a final battle, but without any of the ludicrous cutscenes or progression from Subspace Emissary.

Minigames like the home run contest, Multi-Man Smash, and the Angry Birds-like Target Blast are included, and Classic mode offers the traditional march to Master Hand. This time around, Classic offers branching paths and difficulty levels that offer various chances at trophies, coins, and new moves for Miis and existing characters.

"Do you think love can bloom, even on a battlefield?"

That last reward type is one of the biggest changes to the existing Smash Bros. formula, allowing players to create and tweak alternate versions of their favorite characters. Not a fan of Mario’s standard cape that reflects projectiles? You can unlock and utilize a different cape that electrifies enemies it touches (while omitting its reflection ability). These customization options are great if you want to optimize your favorite characters, but you can turn off custom characters in multiplayer if you’re looking for a more traditional experience.

For all the trophies, stages, characters, and other assorted goodies you can unlock by yourself, Smash Bros. has always been a multiplayer game at heart. The portable nature of the 3DS takes away some of the joy of playing with friends, as the series is best enjoyed on a TV with a traditional controller. Controlling your characters with the 3DS circle pad doesn’t feel quite as responsive as the GameCube analog stick (or even the Wii’s nunchuk), but it’s functional. My main gripe with multiplayer was in its connection issues. Local play works fairly consistently, but I was frequently saddled with lag and connection issues when I tried to take the action online. This same issue was present with Brawl, but part of me hoped that Nintendo would have improved their online offering somewhat with this new entry. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s failure to evolve in terms of online play continues with this high-profile title.

With Super Smash Bros. for 3DS, Nintendo has checked many of the biggest boxes for a sequel. The roster is bigger and better, a large variety of fun stages has been added, and some cool tweaks like character customization make their debut. Spotty online offerings, the drawbacks of being on a portable console, and the lack of a substantial single-player mode hurt the overall experience, but not enough to tarnish the series’ name. If you’re a longtime fan of Nintendo (or just the Smash series in general), there’s plenty here to keep you busy until you can play it in its ideal form on the big screen.

Impressed it functions on the 3ds so well, but I'll wait for the Wii u version. I want to play this with an actual analog stick.

Even if Snake isn't in the game, I'm glad that Dan managed to work in an MGS reference.

Also, good review.

Hmm, this feels a bit short for a GB review. Seems like Dan is still used to writing reviews that would fit in a magazine--or maybe that's just his style? Anyways, nice review.

@liamc723: I liked the review, got across the most important points. So I'm fine with it. The short style is probably a legacy of him having written for a magazine for 5 years.

Going by comments, people have gotten used to Tim Rogers length reviews over the past few years, so one that cuts it to what's necessary and does the job is a welcome change. Doesn't look like much on the plate but it fills the belly up.

There isn't really anything I can put my finger on, it just feels shorter, well which it is compared to Jeff's Destiny review, under half the size of that. I guess it is to do with Dan's print background as others have pointed out.

Hmmm. I've seen other reviews say that they've had more issues with local play than they did with online. Weird how inconsistent it seems to be.

I think a game like Destiny needs a bit more written about it than a smash bros game does

It is shorter than the average GB review no doubt, but I'm happy to give Dan a pass on this one. I mean, he could try to go into detail about if it's a good, balanced, competitive fighting game for tournaments but I know that's not Dan's area of expertise.

Online multiplayer being fucked is an extremely common complaint on forums and such, from what I've seen. Hopefully Nintendo is able to address it, but I don't trust Nintendo to do that in a good way. Love the company, but they're terrible at online play.

I agree with you, but I think Dan could have gone into a bit more detail on different parts and aspects of the game.

How have I not heard of this feature before?!? This sounds really cool! Although I can totally see the tournament scene not allowing custom movesets and keeping everyone play vanilla.

@toug: That's what I was thinking. I've been watching a lot of streams, and the connection seems well playable more than half the time. The comparison I've heard most is that it feels like Street Fighter IV's netcode, which is to say competent but not very adaptable to poor internet connections.

We'll know in one week. :D

Okay so, Dan. This is going to be a strange-sounding compliment (and I'm admitting that upfront), but I am kind of enamored with your comma usage.

I don't know. I like it. The punctuation in this review just sits really well with me for some reason.

i get the feeling Dan is going to be the new Alex Navarro in terms of being a review machine.

its a shame they really didnt put a substantial single player into the game, the subspace emissary thing they did for brawl was interesting,

but Sakurai apparently hated having video of the story mode out there hence why this game doesnt have one.

@liamc723: Maybe the Wii U review will be fleshed out a bit more. I can't help but feel that this (3DS) version of the game can be summed up in a short review. This is not the most interesting version of the game after all. I certainly don't want to play this one over the Wii U version, but I will still buy it because I am a sucker.

@danryckert You have a grammatical issue in the second sentence of the final paragraph: 'The roster is bigger and better, a large variety of fun stages has been added, and some cool tweaks like character customization make their debut.'. Should probably be 'have'.

Dan's voice is everywhere in this. While I fully agree with the removal of video reviews, his conversational style would have fit those well. And good on him for the cute screenshot captions.

Here's hoping that online play in particular is better for the Wii U version. Mario Kart had pretty good online, but a lot of lag was covered up by smoke and mirrors there. I get the feeling online play won't come anywhere near the local multiplayer experience this time around.

Kinda sucks to hear it boiled down to being something of a stopgap until the Wii U version, as for me at least this is going to be the only version I'll have access to for quite some time. Hopefully the 3DS version will continue to have an online community when the Wii U version is upon us anywhoo.

Online multiplayer not working well really does seem like it's something Nintendo's going to need to fix not so much for initial sales, those will be high regardless, but if they plan to release additional stuff tied to this iteration of Smash (ex: the Skylanders-style figurines).

As far as personal concerns go, a big part of the reason why I want to get the 3DS version of the game over the Wii U version is simply that I know far more people with 3DS's planning to get this game than I know with Wii U's and it would be pretty frustrating if I still can't play against them unless we're all physically near each other due to lag issues. That being said, Kid Icarus Uprising seemed to have decent enough online support (though this game would demand more precision than that one and therefore minor lag would be more noticeable), so I'm still holding out hope that the online experience will get fixed in the near future.

He never talked about the gameplay at all. Whatever, anyone who cares about the gameplay of smash don't care about reviews. It is like that for any fighting game. Reviews for them are rather bad and ultimately pointless to anyone without the most passing of interest in the genre. This applys to smash more so than other fighters of course.

Shame about the online issues but that was never a big selling point for me. My only complaint from the demo is sometimes it's hard to tell what's going on but that could just be me playing on an original 3DS, not a XL.

This is one of those games that if every character didn't play the same it would probably be substantially better. At least in theory. I mean there are some differences based on the demo, but in the end it still feels like a fighting system that gets in the way of feeling like you are actually playing the characters.

The only chance I would get this game is if I'm particularly bored, in a moment of weakness. I want to like these games, but it just feels a bit too random, like worse than Marvel vs. Capcom often feels. Chaotic in a bad way.

Also, the 3ds version doesn't really look particularly hot.

Glad this turned out pretty well, but I'll probably skip it because me and my friends ALWAYS default to Smash 64 if we're getting the urge.

I'm glad they got Dan covering Nintendo stuff. He doesn't seem as burned out on it.

Working for a magazine or newspaper trains you like this. In Dan's mind, he's saving that sweet cash that extra page would have cost him. I kind of dig shorter reviews like these, especially when we have Quick Looks to compliment them.

He used to work for Game Informer, where reviews usually had to fit on one page, sometimes half a page, of a magazine - I'm betting that this is actually more than he's used to publishing.

Also, brevity in writing is usually a good idea. It makes your writing snappier and more interesting.

Neither game is really that chaotic tbh. You either get it or you don't, like with any complex game. Though it sounds like you don't like fighting games in the first place.

"the lack of a substantial single-player mode" Bummer, even though it was throw away, the single player of the last Smash was really fun.
